WORST IDEA EVER. Windows Vista automatically restarts after installing updates. Microsoft apparently thought this was a good idea, and I would agree if I needed my computer to randomly reboot as if it's infected by a horrible virus, but the reality is I use the thing for work, so when it reboots and I'm in the middle of something (or stepped away from the desk) it can be a horrible experience.

There is one widespread fix but it apparently does not work permanently for Windows Vista Home. There's a temporary fix by running sc stop wuauserv, but you have to run it after each reboot.

So what I did was open the Start menu, find Startup, right click it and choose Open. Right click and choose New / Text Document. Rename the file to vistasucks.BAT

The phrase vistasucks is not necessary, but is recommended.

Right click the file and choose Edit.
Paste in the following text: sc stop wuauserv

Save the file. The next time you reboot, Windows should automatically disable the reboot-after-update service. If you check the Start menu, go to Startup and run the vistasucks.bat file manually to ensure it's disabled for your current session.

I have not verified if this does actually prevent reboots yet, but from what I read on other sites it should work. It can't hurt though

I have vista home premium, not by choice it was on my notebook i got . I have my automatic update disable. Last time i updated my notebook it asked for a restart and i just said no. And continued working on it. Didnt seem to ran in that issue you talking about. Are there any other parameters active?. I will take a look again.
Soon i am going to change to Ultimate because it has RDP.

Vista Business is on my machine and it's never restarted after an update unless I allow it to do so (after 10min/4 hours/etc)...also you can stop the service Windows Update by opening services.msc.

But it's automatic (at least until I did the fix mentioned above). Or at least, it was on my computer. As soon as that ten minute timer counted down it rebooted automatically. If I had seen it I would've stopped it, but once I didn't make it in time.

But that turns off all of Windows update. I just want to turn off the auto reboot.

That is weird. It's never auto-restarted on me. The box prompting for the reboot or wait X minutes is just sitting there no matter how long I wait to come back.

Maybe it's a "feature" on Windows Vista Home

Or I'm going crazy

Dumbest design ever. Going to have to see of that fix works as the computer restarting mid game sucks.

It's happened to me.... I've started a download and taken off for the day expecting to have something good to watch when I get home only to find my computer waiting to be logged in, and a file about 1% complete.

Here's a screenshot of the restart countdown (note if you're not there and it reaches 0, it reboots itself):

Cant you turn the auto update off. Once a week you can just do update when you have time. That way you control when to update and stuff. Not to mention windows dont get update soo frequently.
