When I take shots with a digital camera I don't find it practical to generate images with HUGE resolutions. Something like 1280x800 seems plenty large to me. But if I set the camera to take pictures at a lower resolution am I wasting the available megapixels? Am I getting a lower quality image than if I set the camera to max res and resized them later? Like, what's the point of a 4000x3000 pixel image?

Well, I am not an expert on digital cameras by and stretch of the imagination but I do know that it is always best to shoot the the highest available resolution so you have a lot to work with down the road should you need that picture in high resolution. Really it probably does not matter to you but space is cheap now so might as well just shoot at the highest resolution. 2gb SD cards are like $20.

Fair enough. Yeah media is crazy cheap, I love it. I'm in the market for a new digicam. I'm looking at the Panasonic Tz5.

9.1mp, 10x optical zoom, can record video in HD (720P). Good looking camera, and apparently quite capable. Much more compact that my previous camera too (which is now for sale btw ) see Tweakmarket

If it were me I'd avoid Panasonic, Toshiba, and other brands that aren't known for their cameras. I saw a deal in the paper this weekend for a Kodak I think for $99 - 10 megapixel, 3x optical zoom, carry case included, etc. I personally prefer those water proof cameras (Pentax, Olympus), but that's just me.

And I agree with Ali. Shoot in the highest resolution you can and just shrink or crop the image as you like.

Hmm that Olympus Stylus SW line really looks cool. It would be nice not to have to handle my digicam so delicately. I don't really want to sacrifice image quality though. (or the cool features mentioned)... oh and it shoots true 16:9, neat. I'm not too wary about trying different brands.

I can tell you that the water proof cameras are more liberating than you would imagine. You no longer fear rain or beer or humidity, and you get a lot of shots you'd never have dreamed of taking before. I've stood on a platform 200ft above the rain forest floor blissfully snapping away in the pouring rain, no worries. Hell, you can take shots IN the pool!

I bought a new camera the other day, should be here today. Canon SD1100 IS with a 2GB card and extra battery. Just in time for my trip to Alaska.
