| Deez nuts. | So, my dad is getting my mom a new computer for her birthday, which means that I'm picking out a new computer for my dad to get my mom for her birthday. Toshiba has amazing bang for the buck, but i've had so many overheating/fan issues with my Satellite A75-S211 that I'm hesitant to recommend a new Toshiba. Here's my first question: if he goes with this toshiba, is it still likely to have overheating issues since the processor is so much slower than mine (3.2GHz)? Here are the other options I have for him... my mom isn't super tech savvy, but needs a decent amount of space (she's a realtor and takes tons of pictures of her houses, plus my dad just got her an ipod so its going to need to hold music now) and something that is likely to be functional for at least a few years. Also for consideration, when my mom's done with the computer it generally gets passed down to my little brother, so moderate considerations for gaming, etc. Thanks guys! | Former Alcoholic | personally i have a hp, its about 3 years old, and the battery lasts 6 minutes unplugged. its been in the shop 3 times, the cpu fan went out, the dvdrom went out and the lcd went out. all under warranty thank god. my ex had a toshiba, great battery life. she just got a new one, seems alright. gateway i've heard has really shitty tech support. personally i'd stick with dell or toshiba, but with your toshiba problems idk. | |

| Banned | Either a Dell D420 if it needs to be portable or a D820 if it will be mostly stationary. Dell business class lappys are tough. Just make sure you spend the extra $20 and get the upgraded screen on the dell...it makes a pretty significant difference, that truebrite option. | |

| Tweak Minion | My friend has the HP. I don't like it at all. It's feels so flimsy. He had to go through a couple to get a decent one. First one at the battery in 10 minutes. 2nd one had flimsy LCD plastic border. His 3rd one works but I don't really like it. | |

| Gramps | The trick is not only what you buy, but where you buy it. CC and BB are box stores that scoop up crap that's dumped on the market. it's that way with lappys and it's that way with plasmas. if a manufacturuer wants to offload a bunch of stuff with known faults.....that's where they go. The closeouts, the super sales, generally are all about a fresh shipment of these items. i'ver been replacing some boards in plasmas that all have the same y&z sustain boards that are giving out. different label, same boards, same retailer...CC. The replacement boards are the same architecture, but different manufacturer. as always, buyer beware. When I get a call about a bad plasm, they were always purchased at CC and a few at walmart. people ask me how I knew they made their purchase at CC......hmmm. | |
