I'm trying to get an 8GB file from my Macbook to my XP box. I have a 60GB external USB drive sitting right here, but it's currently formatted with FAT-32. Can XP read the Mac system, or perhaps the Unix file system?

mac can use FAT32. You can also get mac to use NTFS using macfuse. Another route to go is ext2/3. OS X has native support, and there is a driver for XP. I dunno if there is anyway to get XP to use HFS+ though. I would imagine the answer is yes, seeing how antiquated it is.

There is a program that you can use that allows windows to use Mac OSX's file system. I have no idea what it's called. But my friend (GamePatriot) knows what it is, and uses it.

FAT32 has the 4GB file limitation though.

I should have gotten the god damned super drive with my Macbook and none of this would have been necessary.

No it doesn't! It's something like 100-160GB limit, or at least windows 98 would do it.

4GB is the limit of a single file. 137GB is the limit of the total filesystem.

I would format the 60giger as NTFS. Use the driver/program on Mac that lets Mac read/write NTFS.

Well, Chapel was telling me of a way I could install OSX Leopard from my external USB drive. If I could figure that out I wouldn't need to transfer the data at all.

I followed the instructions here (Creating OS X Leopard Install USB Drive » General » Apple, how-to, leopard, mac os x, OSX) but couldn't figure out how to boot to it. I'm such a Mac noob...

OK, I was pressing the wrong damn button at boot! Everything I read kept saying to press "C" at boot, when it actually turned out to be "Option". So I can boot the drive, but now I have another minor problem. The partition has to be GUID. So now I'm backing up all my shit so I can format and repartition. Not such a big deal, it's been a learning experience. Plus this problem has been preventing me from updating my BIOS.

Well I would think that Vista is compressed on a DVD since it's about 15 GB when it's installed right? I don't recall so correct me if I'm wrong.

6GB is a full clean vista install. It fits on a single layer DVD. The rest of that 15GB would be for hibernation and the paging file. Pretty insignificant anyway, considering most people have at least 500GB at their disposal and you can't buy a disk smaller than 80GB so business PCs are still fine.

Fanbois carry on!

Does anyone have benchmarks of office applications, productivity tools, CAD, gaming, etc, comparing OSX to XP to Vista on Mac hardware and similar Intel PC hardware? I would like to look at some numbers comparing what OS actually offers the best bang with performance in real world numbers.

I've never seen Leopard compared to Vista, but the numbers I saw for XP compared to Tiger indicated XP was faster.
