Hi all
I ran out of disk space so i'm thinking of buying a portable hard disk, can i install games on it and use it to play games from it ? or are portable hard disks good only for backup ?

much better for backup (movies, mp3. iso, etc)

Some basic games will work, but other require to install shit in the system directories and in the registry.

So basically, if your idea was to fuck arount at school with a portable, it will probably be a hard thing to do (amin privileges required, ect)

But, if it's to play games at home, or at a friends, it could be done. You can make let's say, 2 partitions that are bootable. 1 configured on your comp, 1 configured with the hardware of the friend.

But well, if you tell us what you want to do with the HDD, it might help to give a solution

I'm sorry, but I really have no idea what you just said.

It would work fine, but loading times would definitely be impaired. Installing it on the external would be like installing it on any other partition, just slower.

Thanks guys,
It's actually my laptop, and no one upgrades a laptop (even though it's a $2000 laptop), and i just instaleld UT yesterday which took like 40 G !! which forced me to think about buying an external harddrive.
It's not for playing at school it's for personal use guys so i think like most of you suggested, it should be ok, just a slower load time. I'll try it and let you all know in a week or so

Thanks for the reply guys

Unreal took up that much space? Wow, well, what you might end up doing though is taking all your mp3s, pr0n, videos, documents and putting THOSE on the external drive while putting the games on your original hard drive.

What size harddrive does it have? Of course you can upgrade a laptop, but laptop harddrives max right now is something around 200-250gb I believe. They arent hard to swap either, something like that you could ghost and have it back to normal in 2 hours. Unless its one of those ultra slims, sometimes they use mini harddrives.

Yes, the one i have is a sony vio (which is heaven by the way), so no one dares open it to replace the harddrive, and i won't dare do it because i know i'll screw it up

just like you guyst suggested, I'll just start moving my stuff to a temp place and clear more space for the games

to answer your question, i bought UT with a package that had a lot more games that are very very similar to UT (all come in one TU package ! ) from frys so i have no idea why it took this much I have like 12 games, all can be played on LAN !! and one of them is UT (the rest just look like UT but not as cool

Thanks for the help guys

I think the only way you could screw up replacing a harddrive in a laptop, would be if you tired opening it with a hammer. Replacing a laptop drive is easier than a desktop drive....

and with the new version of Vista you'll be able to use your jump drive as extra system memory if u would like
