Linksys publishes the source code for some of its router firmware, allowing computer programmers to tweak it and make new, improved versions. HyperWRT is an interesting variation that provides power-boost and other enhancements to the firmware for the Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS wireless routers.

as far as I'm aware, its still being debated if maxing out your transmit power burns up the router faster. But I've seen it in action a few times, theres no doubt that w/ the boost, the range comes out a lot better. put a directional antenna on the other end, and you can get some badass distance on regular home equipment.
