Linksys publishes the source code for some of its router firmware, allowing computer programmers to tweak it and make new, improved versions. HyperWRT is an interesting variation that provides power-boost and other enhancements to the firmware for the Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS wireless routers.

HyperWRT has these added features :

* Adjustable Transmit Power

* Antenna Select
* 13 Wireless Channels
* 'Boot Wait' flash protection
* Increased Port Forwarding & Triggering Fields
* Increased Qos Device & Application Fields
* Increased Access Restrictions Policies & Blocked Services Fields
* Command Shell
* Telnet Daemon
* Startup & Firewall Scripts
* Uptime
* Reboot Button
* Hidden features in the Linksys firmware

"It is good that war is terrible, otherwise we would become over fond of it." - Robert E. Lee.

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."

To my knowledge most people use sveasoft's firmware.

as far as I'm aware, its still being debated if maxing out your transmit power burns up the router faster. But I've seen it in action a few times, theres no doubt that w/ the boost, the range comes out a lot better. put a directional antenna on the other end, and you can get some badass distance on regular home equipment.
