| | best way to run cable | permalink #1 |
| Former Alcoholic | well i got my internet installed, only problem is the only coaxial wall jack is in my living room. the wonderful techs at time warner gave me a network bridge that sends the signal over the coper wires in the house, well that dropped my speeds from 10,000kbps to bout 3k. so thats out and it kept disconnecting. SO. whats the best way to run cable to my office. coaxial and split it twice for the tv's or stick a router out here and run cat6? any special kind of coaxial cable i should use or will any suffice? i'm so proud of this kick ass connection, i dont wanna be slowed down at ALL. ![]() i'm used to 1500 to 1800 and about 386 up | |

| Habitual line stepper | Just use standard RG6(i think) coax and use decent compression connectors(they're kinda expensive couple $ a pop). The most importand part is the splitter. When AT&T ran the cable internet here they gave me some low/no loss splitters. I had to bug them for the parts, even though THEY were supposed to do the installation. Cat5 would probably be easier though. If you already have the tools to crimp cat5, just do it that way. Use a fish tape and pull the line through the wall into the attic or basement and route the wire that way. I put my switch in the rafters, and just ran a wire to every room. Just remember, no runs more than 300ft. | |

| Tech No0b | that test is only your line speed, divide that number by 8 and you will get you download speed | |

| outside the box! | For your splitter, you'll need a broadband splitter, 1.8 or 2 ghz I think I had to have a 2 gig and green-box rg6 (with the copper main conductor). I was only buying 5Mbs so i was able to get away with cheapo radioshack F-cons. | |

| outside the box! | This 'digital' spec one is what I used: 201-102 - 2-Way 1GHz 130dB Digital Splitter But the main reason I got it was to split the digital TV signal to my vid capture. The cable company supplied the main split from my DVR to cable modem. Thier's were higher spec, but I couldn't find the exact one's they used. and when I shut down my cable service, they did want it back. They were prepared to charge me 35 bux if I didn't return that part. Last edited by mistawiskas; 10-31-2007 at 04:35 AM. | |
