I'm trying to get a feel for Server 2003 but I'm new to all of this, so I need some experienced help. I don't have the luxury of working with an IT department (yet, at least) so I assume I'll have to do this virtually.

I have a Server 2003 'evaluation' I can use and VMWare Workstation. Any other software recommendations? Links? Books? I've tried just fiddling around, after installing and I know that it's pointless without some form of network in place.

Thanks

Just use it as you primary workstation for a while, and set up sample services, etc. It's pretty intuitive I think.

What he said. Or run VMWare and setup a few 2003 servers on a domain, setup DHCP, DNS.

A few VMs running 2003? What about 1 running 2003 and several running XP?

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to configure/monitor/troubleshoot AD replication issues, DFS, etc you will need more than one 2003 server.

Probably the first step is to identify your end goal. Is it just general knowledge of the OS? Are you working towards a certification? That will dictate the best path.

In general though, it is helpful to have at least one client machine. Many labs found in study guides will require one.
