I haven't used linux in probably 4 or 5 years, and my current system is getting close to needing a format (every 6-7 months, Win XP).

So...What's a decent linux distro out there right now? I was thinking about using Ubuntu or one of it's different flavors. Any other suggestions? I used to run Gentoo, and while it's cool and all, I don't feel like dealing with building my own kernel this time around.

Ubuntu, seconded. I think you'll be amazed how far things have come. In fact you might be bored quickly given how easy things are with Ubuntu.

In fact, I think I'll check to see how Ubuntu server is. I'm looking for something to host files and a print queue at the house.

Ubuntu is very nice. I used Gentoo for a few years and enjoyed it, but you end up spending too much time maintaining packages instead of using your system. Ubuntu is a lot less trouble to keep up to date.

I've been looking at the Ubuntu Server specs, and it seems pretty overkill for what I want to do. I wonder if someone has a distro that has similar functionality as Windows Home Server...

When you install Ubuntu server you get the option of what packages you want to install. No need to install everything.

Wow, I guess there really isn't a decision to be made then. Ubuntu it is.

I would be using only Ubuntu right now (I currently dual-boot with Vista Ult.) if my laptop's sound card was supported by ALSA, and OSS screws up quite a bit.

My laptop is XP/Ubuntu. I can't get Ubuntu to work on my main rig. I think it might be the 6 hard drives screwing with it.

I make myself laugh.

If your looking for something server specific on the Linux side, I highly recommend Debian. It can be a much more minimal install and is known to be much more stable over a lengthy period of time. Now, if your installing this on a laptop, then by all means go with Ubunutu. But if your looking for some kind of server, give Debian a look (Debian -- The Universal Operating System)

I'm downloading Kubuntu again to give it another try. Last time i was really annoyed that my WiFi card had no drivers but I'm sure there's a workaround for that. It worked fine, I had wireless but the fact it had no drivers bugged the hell out of me.

Arch Linux. Kinda like Gentoo without all the compiling. Easy to maintain and setup.
