Damn... now this is a good card if these benchmarks are true AND half the price of the Nvidia flagship card.

Test System

ASUS P5E3 Deluxe

That does look impressive. Now they need to come to market with a 4870x2 model and put the spurs to Nvidia. It's been a while since the graphic market was competitive.

Wow, half the RAM too. It will be nice to see a competitve market again. Was there any mention of noise in the article?

I'm trying to evolve.

From what I am seeing, the 4870 is on par with the GTX 260 performance-wise and for quite a bit less money than the 260. Nvidia should probably rethink its pricing. ...or I might buy another 8800GTS, SLI them and match the performance for about a 1/3 of the cost.

Are you sure you can match the performance of a 4870 when the 9800 gx2 is essentially 9800gtx's in SLI and you are going to a SLI 8800GTS? I would look at some benchmarks first. Personally I am waiting for the 9800GTX+ to come out and see where they price it (rumored at $230).

So I've been kind of out of the loop on graphics cards, is the 8800GTS the top of the line nvidia card?

Learn something

Not this one (I think), but the link below provides reviews from various sites regarding heat and noise levels.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 and 4870 reviews

Quote:
The noise level of the 4850 fan is alright, but when the 4870 spins up I tend to glance out the window to make sure a jet isn't just about to fly into the building. It's hugely loud at load, but it doesn't get there fast and it doesn't stay there long. It seems AMD favored cooling things down quick and then returning to quiet running.

I was talking about matching the performance of a 9800 gtx, not the 4870. It's moot though, I just ordered a 4870.

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100243L Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Anyone want to buy an 8800GTS? This is the card you will be buying:

Newegg.com - BFG Tech BFGE88512GTSE GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

It's only a couple months old and has a lifetime warranty. I'll probably try and sell it to someone a little less tech savvy though so I can get some of my investment back.

^^^ Congratulations, let us know what the sound/heat output is like.

Man, this card is almost too good to be true. I just called a friend that was waiting to buy the 9800gtx+ to consider this one since it will probably blow it out of the water.

Hmmm...if I was upgrading sometime soon, I might buy a 4850.

two biggest problems with ati is 1: they get dam hot and 2: they have very poor linux support . not sure yet if this card will have better support in linux but i hope they make specific linux driver for this card instead of some generic crap. because generic drivers just dont bring best out of high end cards.

Its really good to see competition finally hope fully it will bring down the price for other high end Nvidia GFXs.

on a mission to spread linux to every one

no one uses linux for games so its really not a problem for 99.99% of people

EDIT: 99.99999999% actually.

There are lots of very smart ppl working with linux and constantly evolving the OS to new heights. Put it in general terms any one with free mind and question every thing and in computers use linux mostly... offcourse and wiling to constantly learn new things in computer line.

here is one of the list Cedega.com - Home of TransGaming's Cedega - Play Windows games on Linux for linux supported games.

Oh come on. Stop going on about Linux in every single post you make. I use Linux and Windows. They both have their uses. Rambling on about how great Linux is all the time will just annoy people.

Ethnocentric hmmm again not sure if you know the meaing but when you are dealing with ppl form diff religion and nations and working with em the last thing you feel or think is that word.
