One thing clear to me from that list is that there appears to be some consistency in quality, as the difference between the best and the worst is only 3%. I wish they had brands like Acer, E-Machines, etc on that list.

i don't understand why ppl got beef with gateway. I am not saying they are best. I have two gate way towers, they old now about 4.5 years, so i turn them in storage machine, put controller card for Sata drives. Never had a single prob both running linux and working great.
If look at gateway notebook they are the only one with decent price notebook that is good for gaming with GTS card no other notebook to my knowledge offer GTS for gate way price. And if you have 3 years warranty i think they got pretty nice deal for those who want good notebook for gaming and other stuff for under 1800$ easily.

i have dell towers, HP tower some where too, old Compaq presario, gateway towers and custom towers. i don't see any diff in any and no prob, only diff the hardware in em. other then that all run flawlessly.

i was going to say this in new post but figure i will just edit this one

In no way i am praising about gateway but i am not knocking it down either just saying of my experience with em.
i also have gateway two 22in monitors. FPD2275W with PIP lots of connection in back like Analog (VGA) / Digital (DVI) / Component / Composite / S-Video / (4) USB 2.0. 2 years still running fine no prob at all.

I've probably single handedly worked on more Gateway and Dell computers than anyone here, and can say that apart from one particular model generation around the year 2000 they have been similarly reliable. My wife bought a K6 desktop from them that we gave away to charity a few years ago, it's probably still running.

As a former Dell employee, I can honestly say that I refer everybody to dell. Their customer service is great, and the systems themselves hold up pretty well.

I hope dell's regular laptop's are better then there refurbished laptops... Like I said I would never buy anything other than a Lenovo. I've already had two problems with a dell, but it was refurbished. My sister had a warranty (manufacturer) and geek squad, ha. I knew the hard drive was bad through diagnostics and had to wait 4-5 day's for me to tell them that so I could get one through Dell. Now I have to wait 3 - 4 weeks for them to turn the product around and have it in my sister's hands again

Learn something

Well my best suggestion with buying a dell is to try to purchase one through a friend/family that owns a small business. You get better and faster support from Dell themselves without having to go through any middle men.

QFT. Or better yet, try to get Dell certified. I just bought my wife a Dell with the 2 year warranty and I can literally order the parts myself. I don't have to sit on the phone with Abdulla while we reads me the script.

EDIT: But I have to give kudos to Gateway too. It took them two tries to get me a replacement LCD screen. But they were fast and courteous, and didn't give me any shit about the number of dead pixels, etc. And the laptop has been flawless.

Is it just me or do others also think mac is overrated(and over priced)? Yea it's probably better than HP and dell, but not better than custom built

Once Apple gets bigger, they will soon run into many problems just as any big company does.

I use a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4747, 2 gigs crucial ram, Dual Core AMD Turion 64 X2 1.8 GHz , 200 GB HD, 15.4" Display

No, Macs are not over-rated IMO. I have had my mac for 2 years now and will never look back.

I find the starting range to have acceptable prices for what is a quality product with great design. It really isn't about the hardware at all though, the zealotry is all about the software. The OS is made to work exclusively for the set hardware range, hence the "it just works". In the same vain the individual dashboard software works great on a 360 or PS3, it is made to work on one particular set of hardware.

negativo bossman. I worked for Dell also (as an internal server support guy.) I love their desktops and laptops (own one of each right now), but HP takes teh cake far and away when it comes to servers. I have worked in companies that deploy hp on the client end, and would pick dell there. But server-wise, HP kills dell in my opinion. iLo + the front panel readout (support: what light is on?) beats the crap out of dell. the fact that dell tells you to reseat the drives in case of failure should be a good indicator.
