I've got an office computer that has a corrupt file system. It will not boot into safe mode or any other fail safe mode.

I've tried the drive in another computer to see if I could access it's files but I just get a "file system is corrupted" error.

I tried using partion magic to fix errors but it crashes while reading the drive.

What are my options to fix this besides a format and reinstall? Are there any other good tools that might be able to fix this?

The partition is ntfs by the way.

Best thing I can think of off the top of my head is to run a repair of the OS if it's XP or reinstall windows to a different directory for previous OS's.

If it's xp do this: boot from the CD and at the first prompt for install or repair hit enter to install. Then you'll get the eula and a screen that says Windows is already installed, would you like to install to a diff directory or repair. This is where you choose the repair option...I believe MS calls it an inplace upgrade/repair of XP.

I got it thanks.

I put the disk in another computer and ran chkdsk and it fixed the issue.

Now I have to figure out how to clean the system, it's got spyware and I'm sure there is a virus on it too. The only problem is that I don't have internet access right now (I'm using my cell phone as a modem and it's too slow to download all the things I need).

You could try a repair install of Windows, but first...

Get to the recovery console, R at the first screen you come to, run...

chkdsk /F /R
fixboot c:
fixmbr c:

I would try to fix any bad sectors first though, since that could be causing hte corruption. Use spinrite or hdd regenerator for that. That way you wont' lose any data in the sectors. Windows simply marks the sectors as defective and moves on, it doens't really recover any data from the sectors, like it claims. If one of those programs does find bad sectors, back up your drive as soon as possible. Hard drives are designed to deal with a certain number of bad sectors, as it is impossible to make a drive with no bad sectors. The drive should automatically detect bad sectors and swap them out for new ones without any user or OS interaction. If a drive is ever reported to have bad sectors, YOU DRIVE IS ABOUT TO DIE. It may last a few days, a few weeks, maybe a few months, but your drive is failing. Backup up and replace it. ^_^

SpinRite is pretty great. When the next election rolls around, I am going to vote for Steve Gibson as the new Jesus. I think we need a change after 2000 years. Sure the current Jesus can cure illness, but can he cure bad sectors? I think not.

Steve Gibson for Jesus, 2008!

I've never heard of spinrite.

Whats the difference between the /f and /r switch?

The recovery console version of chkdsk may not have the /f switch, using just the /s should get the job done. Try chkdsk /? at the recovery console for details on its available switches.

You can read more about spinrite here

I just used the chkdsk /f switch.

I can now boot into the OS but I think some programs are located on those bad sectors, I'm trying to delete those programs now.
