Had the wifes system lock me out of any and all ways to turn off any services and entry of admin tools. Extreemly long bootup times, suspicions of virii and bad lag in all things and the above prompted a reformat and reinstall of Xp upgrade version. problems started after the install, that went off without a hitch. NO BOOT! No drive can be booted. The boot sectors are gone and only one drive gets recognized a caviarWD1200 and this is the recognition in the bios:

Now WTF is up with that shit. the boot sectors are gone on both hard drives. i can browse them in another computer and they show the OS's on them, but will not take a format as a boot drive.

Same happened to me, you wiped the drive. (thoughts)

Do the letters randomize when booting?

Look into getting a Firmware update for your HD. That's the only thing I can think of.

My buddy got a firmware virus. We had to toss the board and build from scratch. But I never saw the drive report that way.

Haven't seen anything like that in years, esp since the BIOS is write protected now.

Bad hdd is possible. A coworker had something similar happen to those characters in the BIOS and the drive was shot. All your symptoms would also point to drive failure.

But until re-instalation of windows XP, the drives worked flawlessly. I'm almost paranoid enough to suspect MS of timebombing XP with an update, in order to force Vista on the public. But it may be something real simple.

the drive could have been going bad and the format could have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Wait, a Hard Drive firmware virus? How does one go about being infected with one of those?

I've got firmware that doesn't work all the time, but that's old age related, not viral.
