Depends. Do you want to be up and running within a few hours, or do you want to know how the Linux system works? Slackware for the first, Gentoo for the 2nd.

Most Definately. Gentoo is the best linux distro I have ever used and I don't think I will be switching. I have tried others(Slack, Debian, and one other I think) and they just don't compare. I;ve never seen anything that rivals the Portage System.

i highly recommend Ubuntu/Kubuntu or Xandros(though it costs...). Gentoo is good if you wanna start from scratch and learn as you go but the other 3 i mentioned are insanely easy to install and come with all the software you need basically to do whatever you want.

Gentoo stole the idea of portage from FreeBSD's ports system. Actually, they didn't steal it, but they adopted the idea and made some changes to it that would suit a linux system. Gentoo really is nice, though, I love the file heirarchy setup it has, it's very BSD.

I installed Ubuntu. It was my first Linux installation and so far I like it a lot. I would consider switching to other distros if I knew the pros and cons, but so far this works fine so I'll stick with it until I hit a barrier.

I guess Gentoo, with it's portage system, could be considered as an... emerging... standard for non-newbies then? I love a good bad g33k pun! Here's another! For me, Kubuntu's package system is... apt... enough for my purposes! ROFLCOPTERS!!!

I think they make both a Linux and BSD flavor of Gentoo, from what I've read...

Apt sucks so bad compared to Portage. They are almost not even in the same league.
