| I Am The Black Wizards | Depends. Do you want to be up and running within a few hours, or do you want to know how the Linux system works? Slackware for the first, Gentoo for the 2nd. |

| Tweak Minion | i highly recommend Ubuntu/Kubuntu or Xandros(though it costs...). Gentoo is good if you wanna start from scratch and learn as you go but the other 3 i mentioned are insanely easy to install and come with all the software you need basically to do whatever you want. |

| Senior Member | STOP DECIDING ON A DISTRO BASED ON THE INSTALL lol, axl rose hit it on the head with portage, i love gentoo exactly for this reason. |

| I Am The Black Wizards | Gentoo stole the idea of portage from FreeBSD's ports system. Actually, they didn't steal it, but they adopted the idea and made some changes to it that would suit a linux system. Gentoo really is nice, though, I love the file heirarchy setup it has, it's very BSD. |

| Chief Webologist | I installed Ubuntu. It was my first Linux installation and so far I like it a lot. I would consider switching to other distros if I knew the pros and cons, but so far this works fine so I'll stick with it until I hit a barrier. |

| I guess Gentoo, with it's portage system, could be considered as an... emerging... standard for non-newbies then? I think they make both a Linux and BSD flavor of Gentoo, from what I've read... |

| Tweak Minion | Apt sucks so bad compared to Portage. They are almost not even in the same league. |

| P/T State Worker | Jeez, i want my computer back now, so i can install gentoo... My dad is using it for the time being while i setup his new computer... I'm just to lazy to do it... i guess when i finally get my computer back i will dual boot with gentoo and xp, i'll still use my laptop though for xp, and my desktop for linux. |
