my machine is now a little over 4 years old. i built it back in December of 2002. I even remember making a post about it back on the old pcstats boards with everyone drooling with envy. 4 years later and i cant seem to find a reason to upgrade. the only things i have changed in the 4 years is replace a bad memory stick, add more hard drives and replace the stock HSF for a zalman. i haven't overclocked in fear that my room will get hotter then it already does in the summertime, nor do i need to since I don't game. i reckon this pc will last me another year until i am craving a nice core 2 duo or whatever new that will come out in the beginning of 2008.

specs for the the curious folk:
2.8ghz P4 "Northwood" with 512K cache (yes, its under 1MB)
1280mb of ram
ati 9700 pro 128mb agp

the kicker is that i can get the core 2 QX (quad core) for $500 with my sisters intel employee discount but then again, wtf am i gonna do with that chip since i don't game.

anyone else not feeling the need to upgrade their main machine of 4+ years?

I don't need to upgrade but I am.

So far I have a core duo 2 e6300 and an intel 965 mobo. I'm debating whether or not I want to make this my main rig or turn it into an htpc.

Either way I go its going to cost me a lot more money than I really want to spend for a new computer

I'm going to be building a basic HTPC with parts from this system and retrofitting this one with old parts. The HTPC will take over light gaming duties and this PC will continue to be used for really basic crap. The specs for both systems are as follows:

HTPC
Antec NSK2400 <--- Need to buy
Biostar M7NCG 400
Sempron 3000+
Thermaltake Volcano 10+
Kingmax SuperRAM 400 (2x512MB)
Seagate ST3160812A (160GB)
MSI NX6600GT-VTD128
LG GSA-4163B DVD±R/RW
Hauppauge PVR-500MCE w/ BeyondTV <--- Need to buy
Logitech Cordless Internet Pro combo <--- Need to buy
Logitech Harmony 6xx universal remote control <--- Need to buy
Windows XP Home Edition

Desktop
Antec SLK1650
Biostar M7NCD
Athlon XP 2000+
Thermaltake Volcano 8
Kingmax SuperRAM 400 (512MB) <--- Need to buy
Seagate ST3802110A (80GB) <--- Need to buy
MSI G4MX4000-T64
LG DRD-8160B DVD-ROM
LG GCE-8527B CD-R/RW
Logitech Office Pro
Logitech Marble Mouse
openSUSE Linux 10.2

If you see a pattern with the brands of the components... well, I stick to stuff that works for me!

I have a 160GB Maxtor which will be filled with MP3s and moved inside an external enclosure with an Ethernet port so it can be connected to my WRT54G. I've yet to find a decent enclosure, though.

I'll probably splurge on a desktop replacement laptop sometime this year.

My wife's hand-me-down machine is identicle to yours, with the exception of all the Hdd space and contents, of coarse.

I'm starting to think that , for games, I'll get a PS3 instead of the latest/greatest vid card. The costs are similar and ther blue-ray capabilities...oh yeah.

I'm running a Soundblaster live 5.1 in a 4.2 config and it sounds way better than any sound config I've checked out this holiday season.

I really didn't need to upgrade, here are my current specs:

Pentium 4 3ghz
1GB DDR 400mhz
Nvidia 6800 Ultra AGP

I built that system about 4 years ago, only upgrading the video card from my old Geforce Ti4200. My reasoning for upgrading was the following:

1) I've got two other systems on my network and if I wait too long I'll have to upgrade all of them around the same time.
2) I've started playing Oblivion and it ran like shit.
3) My current system had a RAID 0 OS drive which does not have Linux drivers, and I want to dual boot Ubuntu.
4) I do a fair amount of media encoding.
5) I just wanted to!

Yeah...now that I don't work in a computer shop, temptation isn't nearly as strong. I've got:

P4 3.2Ghz S478
2GB PC3200 DDR Ram
236GB Hard Drive (36GB Raptor as boot; 200GB Seagate as storage)
256MB 7800GS AGP Video Card

It plays any games that I'm the least bit interested in and I don't even have that much time to play anymore, being on the road all the time.

I'll think about upgrading in another year or two.

Mine were necessary replacements,
-My 2.4 pent4 (my Gateway box) went to my kids room to replace a pent3 w/ win98 system.
-I needed a system for my family room for my oldest boy, (myspace, aim, and limewire light gaming), and my other half. She only plays card games but god help the one that closes her game while she's on a streak! That box is a p4 551 3.4 @ 4.0 with an agp 6800 vid card.
- lastly, mine downstairs which is in my sig, I had bought the 820D back in july and the p5ld2 board expecting the conroe but when I got connie I found the board revision 1 was NFG, so i bought rev 2 and this is what I have now.
I'll keep playing with this for a while, I don't see any upgrades in my immediate future other than building the cabinet I want and putting my 7950 back in along with the watercooling again.
What I really need is to get ambitious and get back to the work this house still needs. About 1 1/2 rooms left to renovate and one 2 car garage / shop to build and my house will be done but for normal maintenence.
Where can I get some of that liquid high speed I see on TV?

Q6600@ 3.4 Underwater, P5E-VM HDMI, 4GB OCZ, EVGA 8800GT, PCP&C 610w

Since DX10 is Vista only, I'm waiting for quad cores, 4gb ram, and next gen DX10 cards to fit my budget, then I'll upgrade. Currently running a Barton 2500+@3.2Ghz in an EPoX 8RDA+, 1gb DDR400, Radeon 9500(softmodded to 9700pro BIOS then overclocked past 9800pro benchmarks), PATA drives all the way around hehe. So expensive now though, my current rig cost me $700 with the watercooling, built it 3 1/2 years ago right when bartons came out.

Being a gamer allways breaks my bank lol, my old Athlon 750Mhz 786mb ram running gentoo can handle all my regular desktop needs except gaming :-S

I jumped because of pending games. At the time Crysis was due in Q1 07. Also I needed a hobby project and the bug had gotten under my skin and for ONCE I wanted to get a cutting edge (if not bleeding) system.

P180B, E6600 @ 3.6, Evga 680i, Corsair DDR2-1066 Dominator (2*1GB), Evga 8800GTX @ 650/1000, X-Fi XM, WD Raptor 150GB, WD 2500KS, Plextor 755SA, Seasonic M12 700.

I bought my old PC (~3 years old) because I sold my OLD PC (2GHz AMD Athlon XP, some old crappy NVidia video card, liquid cooling setup (memory, graphics chip, and processor), 2 gigs of memory, 100 gig WD hard drive) to my brother so I wouldn't have to ship it. The old PC was a Shuttle (3GHz P4, 150 gig WD hard drive, 512meg of cheap ram, ATI Radeon 9550 video card, onboard sound). It was having troubles running any newer games, and I got fed up fighting with the only PCI slot, only 2 memory slots, no room for upgrading, and it's only 2 USB 2.0 ports. I just went all out on my new PC so I will finally have exactly what I want. I kind of went all out on it, to make sure I was happy with it. I even bought Windows XP-64 (what I'm running now) for my new PC. I finally got it running stable, and I am happy with everything except video performance. The video card is my bottleneck, and will be replaced as of Monday (God willing) with the PNY 8800GTS.

~Will Courtier~

Windows Vista Ultimate X64
Mach Speed Mk8-939 Mobo
AMD 64 FX-55 2.6GHz San Diego core processor
Vapochill Micro Heatsink/Fan 4gb of Adata Vitesta DDR-400 dual channel memory
PNY 8800GTS 640meg video card
500/320 Seagate Barracuda HD's
1TB External HD (Western Digital)
BFG 650w PSU

Eh, I don't see a reason to upgrade anymore for now.... Games for the PC are pretty stale IMO (except for CoH) so until some stuff comes out that actually needs a beefy PC. I'm going to hold out.
