| Globe Trekker | Adobe has to be difficult about everything. Like when you try to download and install their PDF viewer. It won't just download the files, you have to download and INSTALL a downloader to get the files. WTF? ![]() | |

| Too old to be this dumb! | After doing lots and lots of reading, it seems like PDF-XChange is the winner among PDF Viewer alternatives, in printing, rendering, and handling large PDF files. It also allows the use of a "typewriter" mode, so you can type on a PDF file even without forms. It's one drawback (if it IS a drawback) is that it doesn't do javascript forms yet. I can live with that. Of the ones I listed, only Foxit is even semi-decent, and it's search function is broken, as well as having horrible print quality... With that Adobe Downloader program, you also have to UNinstall it afterwards, or it acts like a download manager for ALL downloading. The latest versions of Adobe Reader are so bloated with unneeded stuff (and unneeded OTHER PROGRAMS like Yahoo Toolbar), and difficult to trim back (from the downloader to the startup process, among other things) that I won't go back to Adobe, if I ever need to reinstall. For the moment though, I've got the Adobe reader beat back to manageable proportions, having stopped the startup process, killed the downloader, disabled update checking, and turned off the firefox plugin. It works, and that's all I care about for now. Last edited by Goofus Maximus; 05-21-2007 at 09:16 AM. | |
