| As some of you know, I work on the side for an IT group setting up networks and fixing PCs. Over the last year I've set up more home networks than I care to recall, typically over 10 per week. In the past, there have been very few problems with Linksys products and typically our company, along with other large groups such The Geek Squad, have recommended Linksys products to most clients as they offered the best reliability and compatibility.
This has apparently changed with the latest revision of the Linksys WRT54G router, the v5 models in particular, with DSL accounts. DSL connections typically have a PPPoE (point-to-point-over-ethernet) configuration that is saved on the modem itself, then a router uses DHCP to assign IP addresses to the PCs on the network. Once the login e-mail and password are saved on the modem it usually does not require a connection to be re-established and the connection never drops (indicated by the Internet light on most DSL modems like Speedstream 4100 and 5100s used by SBC Yahoo!).
Unfortunately, bridging the connection and allowing the router to handle the PPPoE authentication does not seem to fix the problem, either. This latest router allows the Internet light to turn off intermittently, causing a giant headache for most users. The reason for this may be the TTL (time to live) value of the connection or a fluke in the router's firmware, which unfortunately no upgrade fixes at this time. So if you've got a Linksys WRT54G router and DSL, and you're experiencing major connectivity issues such as those described here, you should definitely consider replacing the router with either an older Linksys, a different model, or a different brand entirely. I haven't seen many problems with the WRT54GS, but lately my tastes have been moved toward the Buffalo and Netgear offerings instead.
Linksys: please fix this issue with firmare. By now you have to be aware of its existence! |
