Sony has announced that the 20GB Playstation 3's price will be slashed by about 20%, dropping the cost to around $410 USD.

Quote:
That puts the PlayStation 3 in the same range as the combined basic Xbox 360 and HD DVD player in Japan, where the duo will sell for 49,600 yen, or $427.

There are no plans to lower prices in the U.S. or other markets, Sony spokeswoman Nanako Kato said.
The PS3 arrives in Japan on November 11th. Both versions (20GB and 60GB) include HDMI, but the 60GB version also supports Wi-Fi. No announcement has been made on its price dropping yet.

I'm Tweak3D's self-appointed mayor.

It wont, Sony has no intention to do it because they know their console will sell regardless the price they set it. Specially with the limited amount of console going to be available anyways.

Yeah but that is probably even more true for Japan where the ps2 still regularly outsells the 360.

I hope you die

They would have definitely sold those PS3s in Japan anyway. If anything I'd imagine the US would be a harder sell than Japan at this point. Nobody's buying 360s there, saving pennies for PS3s.

If the price did drop to $400 US I'd probably pick one up, as much as I hate typing that.

I still dont like sony, but there are some good games coming. I know sony wont drop the price, because MS will then drop their price, and well, sony is still in the same spot.

ya i really think sony is killing itself with the PS3. I LOVED the PSX and the PS2 but I am not impressed with the PS3. There's just too much wrong with it. I understand for a blue ray player, it's a "good" deal but for most of us, we don't care about that. And what happens if/when blue ray goes down the crapper? Plus the unit is just so HUGE. what's up with that? i don't want something that big! i hear that game manufacturers are not impressed with it either so it sounds like Sony might not be the king of games anymore. And then let's not forget the price, rediculous that you can buy a 360 and a Wii for the same price as a PS3. We'll see what happens but I don't see PS3 winning the war this time...

the other thing about the PS3 is that currently blu-ray players are frickin expensive. making the PS3 nearly viable as simply a blu-ray player

Yeah, but who wants to buy a half assed bluray player. I didnt buy an xbox or ps2 to play dvd's. For the price, if you look at bluray + game console, it is a deal, and I can see where sony is coming from. But as a gamer I dont care about bluray and it doesnt provide any benefits that are really tangible. The PS3 is Sony's trojan horse to win the next gen dvd format wars. Thats it.

personally, i never considered sony the "king of gaming." they are just good at advertising to the majority of people interested in gaming (not to be confused with gamers). sony's testing the faith of it's fanbase too much with the ps3, and while they my keep the hardcore gamers, they will probably lose a huge amount of business on this 3rd gen console.

I'm getting the Wii for sure.. I may get Xbox 360 but their games aren't very impressive. I might get it for sport games though...

Here is the Question of the Week over at Gamasutra that asks, "What will Sony have to do to convince the developers and us consumers of the PS3's dominance?"

I havent got to read it yet, but its 5 pages long, and should be a good read since its from Gamasutra, a gaming industry media outlet.
