I believe we still have a few die hard IRC chatters, but the majority of us relegate ourselves to the forums. Why? Well I, for one, find running an IRC application is inconvenient. The computer I use has to have mIRC loaded on it, and it's just another window to manage.

Another forum I frequent has a web-based chat app integrated into their forums. It's a simple matter of clicking 'chat room' on the title bar at the top of the page and voila, a chat room is opened in another tab within your browser. What's more, before you open the chatroom you can see who's already currently in there. This easy access makes all the difference in the world for me, I find myself popping in and out of there all the time.

I'm not sure weather Vbulletin is capable of such a thing, and if not I suppose this idea won't see the light of day. The forum I saw it on was running Simple Machine Forums (SMT 1.1.5).

i seen integrated chat system on animethat. just click on any anime and the live chat system there, its not a forum though.

Sounds like a good idea, I'd be more inclined to chat in real time too rather than having another IRC window open like smirnoff mentioned...
