Intel is pushing multicores as a future technology introducing a Tera Scale programme to encourage developers to write to dual and multicores. Intel does this sort of thing, said Rattner.

It only makes sense. Why virtualize two processors when you can actually put two processors on one piece of silicon?

Granted, I haven't read much about this yet, but what is the performance boost by actually having that extra cpu as opposed to the hyperthreading?

Depends on the app really.

Exactly, the application has to support multi-threading, but the same is true with HT. HT never was a huge improvement. The virtualization sometimes hurt the performance of applications, namely games. With having a true dual core solution, you will have the same limitations as in applications needing SMP support, but you won't have the virtualization overhead.
