well, my mom is in ICU recovering from a bad diabetic mishap, she let herself really go this time, almost died. It triggered all kinds of other issues within her body to near failure. She lives by herself and isnt very good about checking her blood sugar and eating right, not to mention this is the third time in the past several months she thinks it'll "get better" before having to goto ER.

so im thinking about getting her some diabetic cookbooks with meals that are easy to prepare, kinda cheap, anyone have any suggestions?

im thinking about setting up a nurse to visit every 3 days, im pretty sure her insurance will cover it.

any new blood sugar monitors on the market worth looking at?
any other suggestions?

i love my mom, but damn is she trifling about taking care of herself. I can understand how its so hard because everything you eat has sugar in it and its such a tiring pain trying to manage and eat right.

She's overweight I'm assuming? She's probably depressed and has elected suicide by donut. I've seen this sort of thing before. I'd highly recommend you speak with someone at the hospital about her situation, they'll be able to arrange what she needs. Probably in the form of a social worker, in home nursing visits, and likely some psychiatric evaluation. How old is she?

56, shes actually lost alot of weight in the past years.. i think shes now 144lbs/5ft-4" from what i read on the white board. that might be overweight, not sure.

well she did call me to call an ambulance, she was barely coherent and feared 911 wouldnt understand her. but i wouldnt doubt it though

I don't know anything about diabetes, but I learned of a pretty serious health issue with someone I know today.

A guy I worked with in the past (he quit) is in a medically induced coma, has a flesh eating bacteria and might die. I guess they already cut out his deltoid muscle, and he might loose his whole arm if he manages to live... to top it all off, hes broke, he can't sell his house he can't afford in the crappy market, has a 3 year old kid or something, and just had another baby....

Talk about a horrible situation....

Sorry to be such a downer

Send a message via AIM to OcTaNe91

they have new meters that use less blood so you cant test in places other than your finger, like your forearm.
if her insurance covers it, tell her to ask her doc about an insulin pump. 10x easier than constantly injecting yourself
