The newspaper shouldn't have condoned that brand of irreverence but the Arab world needs to also lighten up. I don't see the end of the backlash coming with a mear appology. Freedom of speach is one thing, but openly, publicly mocking and disrespecting another's religeon is just plain asking for trouble. It'd be the end of the world, as we know it, if everyone had respect for everyone else. That does include Islam. When are they (middle east) going to conceed the fact that you simply cannot get ahead by getting even.

This is true, but it shouldn't be. Making fun of someone's religion should be no more significant than making fun of their favourite football team or whatever. Religion doesn't deserve the special treatment it gets, and threats of violence in response to a cartoon just confirms how badly screwed up Islam is. The world would be much better off without it.

What really annoys me about this is the fact that Muslims apparently consider everyone to be bound by this "No images of Mohammed" law. Last time I checked Denmark wasn't an Islamic state.

Once a person has abandoned reason, common sense, and science long enough to believe in an organized religion they're so far in the weeds that rioting over a cartoon in the paper probably makes complete sense.

Say what you will about Communist Russia, they had the right idea with religion. We need to clone Satlin and send him to the Middle East for a few years.

Unlike a football team, religion, ANY religion, is rooted to a man's way of life. This is the basis on which he lives, acts and interacts with other people. So it's understood that emotions will fly high once a man's way of life is parodied, or mocked in any form. Remember how everyone went ballistic from John Lennon simply saying "The Beatles are more popular than Jesus"... even if at the time, that was probably true.

It's understandable to be angry but violence or killing over a cartoon is unacceptable. It's sort of like the riots that killed 15 some odd people on the basis of a false story based on an unsubstantiated rumor of a Koran being flushed. The American media knows better though, they just make fun of Jesus instead, cuz they don't want to end up with notes stabbed into their chests.

This is what I meant when I said religion gets special treatment. If people want to believe in something that ridiculous, fine. There's still no reason to avoid causing them any offence just because it may be the most important thing in their life. If they can't accept any criticism or gentle mockery, tough.

Stalin had his contemporary counterpart; a counterpart who secretly wanted to emulate Stalins governing model. This counterpart's name was Sadaam Hussein. I don't want to go that route, thank you...

As for Islamic protests over cartoons which were far more insulting/obscene in Islamic eyes than in Western eyes (if I whacked you with a slipper, would you feel like I'd just peed on you?), that's understandable, and it unfortunately gives grist for the radical bombers/kidnappers recruiting mills. Nonetheless, it's time those folks learned about freedom of speech, and that it means "you protect my freedom to say things offensive to you, and I'll protect your freedom to say things that are offensive to me." They need a Ghandi or Martin Luther King Jr., to show them how to protest effectively through non-violence, as an alternative to the Hamas philosophy of blood and Martyrs.

Don't make excuses for them. The reaction has been out of all proportion to reality. That they can't accept something as innocuous as a few simple cartoons without resorting to violence, intimidation, threats and boycotting tells you all you need to know about Islam. A "peaceful" religion?

Sitting here thinking about American History, I can't think of a thing the Muslims are doing that we ourselves haven't done, such as mining the harbor of Nicaragua, and supplying the "Freedom Fighters" to rape and pillage there, in order to stamp out "Godless Communism" in this hemisphere.

I still remember people here recommending bombing Countries who's folks burned the American Flag, and shooting US Citizens who did so. It all depends on what the symbol is that people are dumping on, doesn't it?
