| Globe Trekker | Good thread question! I had a few, but at the moment I can only think of one: 11-12th grade history teacher - Mr. Wood. This guy really got me to see past the media and history books and see the truth. He gave me self esteem and made me want to be a better person. He once told me "Every man has a price. The trick is not to go cheap." | |

| Conspiracy of One | I don't think I really had one till 7th grade, then it was my English teacher Mr. Yancy. As I got older and into my 20's I think my Dad became my hero (and still is). If I end up half the man he is, I'll do allright. | |

| Uber Noob | Its kinda hard to answer......I can't say there were too many good influences in my life..... My Mom definately! Of all the crap my brothers and sister did and all the hard times our family had she was the rock that kept it together! I had an Independant Studies art teacher, Mrs. Stanley, that was way cool and sometimes we used to just chat about life - her more than me cause I was only a sophomore in high school......she has been all over the world doing art studies....she opened my eyes to the idea of new and different things in art of all forms - like music and pottery and painting, sculpting....architecture.......thusly I was able to pick up more on different lessons in life in general....... | |

| Tweak Minion | As a young boy, my grandfather. Self taught very curious man. He needed to "see" how everything worked or grew. He was great with machines and nature but with people just cold. As I got older my own parents, for they were both people oriented. I never gave it a thought it until now so I never told my father. Little late for him but Moms still around. thanks Jishory I gotta call to make! edit spelling Last edited by WoodButcher : 09-07-2006 at 07:01 PM. | |

| Nuclear Waste | It's really hard for me to choose. I have admired many, many people. These include many who are thought to be junkies in one way or another, or seen as very eccentric. These are the type of people who are great people in the end, and are very intelligent. They were just handed a tough hand in life, and can't seem to get a foot up. In the end, I was really changed by a guy I worked with at the restaraunt I worked at before the Navy. I got pretty close to him, and we hung out a lot. We trusted each other with damn near anything, and both gave each other advice. He was almost to the point of suicide, but decided otherwise to ensure he seen me "grow up." Anyway, he was a horrible alcoholic. I'll admit it, I drank with him on many occasions. I was also able to stop him when he had drank enough. He would listen to me and only me. I helped him to get into a new home when he didn't have $10 in his wallet. I helped to get him food when he was stuck in his home (during a blizzard) with an upper respiratory infection. I've helped this guy out more than you guys can imagine... Anyway, he disappeared shortly after I joined the Navy. I tried to track him down multiple times, and noone had any idea where he went. Through a mutual friend, we finally found him. He went to rehab, and is still there. He is now 7 months clean from all drugs and alcohol, loving life, and is really making something of himself. I admire him more than anything for making something of his life, and hope to someday help others, and give "real world" advice such as that which he has given me. ~Will Courtier~ | |

| Party? Where? | My hero when I was a kid was arnold schwarzenegger. Seriously, I loved all his movies, and all my friends did too. He may not have inspired me to do anything at all, but I thought he was the shit and idolized his coolness.. Lets all remember that I was about 8-12 during those years and it was the early 90's. I admire my dad quite a bit right now, that guy is pretty damn cool. Other than being an alchoholic, he is a jack of all trades. Hes a master at carpentry, electrical, plumbing and construction. He is just amazing at making tools out of everyday things that are incredibly effective. He works at a bindery that makes binders, books and brochures. They print out like 100's of thousands of these things, and all the huge ass machines that do it from germany, he assembles. Its nuts. He showed me this machine that was in several crates in pieces when I was at his work once and the next time I came it was assembled. He did it all. Keep in mind that these machines and printing presses easily fill a giant warehouse. He doesn't even have a high school diploma lol. Now he's making real good money, his boss and him are best of friends, and he's ALWAYS in a positive mood. Love the guy. | |

| A Texan, Visiting Newfoundland, told a local about the size of his ranch. "I can drive my pickup for a day and a night, and still not leave my land." "Oh yeah," said the Newfie "I used to have a truck like that." | ||

| Globe Trekker | I've given this a lot of thought and I can't even say that Mr. Wood (above) would truly qualify as a hero. I mean, he was a role model and mentor, but hero might be too strong of a word. I had very few role models or mentors, and now that I think about it probably no heros at all. | |
