I doubt it would catch on here in Florida. Clear away the trees and this is what you have left....

As long as it doesn't have to look like the interior was salvaged from Atlantis.

interior design is win..
but i cant see myself waking up to look out the window at some slummy looking pond and moldy shaded crypts in the walls.. it just looks like its muggy and wet down there and mold could easily be a problem.

i rather wake up to see the view on top of that mountain instead

Oh yeah, this is exactly the sort of house I hope to build some day. Lots of thermal mass to cut down on energy costs.

I've thought about living in an earth home, it's a good concept but don't like how this one is designed. A concrete home would work better in this part of the country imo.
The Hobbit homes are kick azz btw.

QFT. Those interiors look like ass to me. I'd rather have something more earthy if I lived in the ground. Bag End FTW.

Seriously, I'd rather have more hobbit styled interior. Just scaled for... not hobbits.

I'd have no problem at all living in a home like that. The energy efficiency is awesome.
I'd also concider converting an Atlas E/F missile silo. (built to withstand a 1 megaton blast centered a mile away)
Here's an article about my boss's inlaws. CNN.com - Abandoned missile silos become safe homes - Aug. 2, 2003. They did a neat thing and live as off-grid as they can now.

that looks awesome. I'd totally live like that or in a missile silo if I had the money.

I seriously think tweak is turning into queer eye. Obviously the interiors suck. The built into the hill aspect is what is desirable and would work awesome out here.

Interiors can be changed, the proven energy efficiency is what lights my fire. As mentioned, the moisture control is an issue with any structure below grade.
