is this the noise emitter that only teens can hear? used by some places to keep teens from loitering?

if so, i can still hear it...which is suprising, because I've worked in an industrial area with no hearing protection for a loong time. i figured my ears would be shot by now.

With the volume turned up slightly, you can hear a very high pitched pulsing noise. Bloody annoying, I can see why they'd use that to try and discourage teenagers from hanging around.

Hmm, all I could hear was the background traffic. I didn't hear any sustained high pitched noises.

Shit, I aint no teen and I heard it. Felt like it was in the back of my neck it was wierd. Surprises me too, I listen to saws and nail guns all day, not to mention firing off ramsets and I can hear it with my 48 year old ears. Damn anoying.

Granted, I'm using shitty laptop speakers, but I heard nothing. I guess I'm getting old...

Here is another site with more sounds.

http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/hearing.html

My wife hears higher pitched sounds where I do not and she is older.

i know exactly what you mean. like you can tell if a TV is on even if ther is no picture or audio? just a buzzing sound...

anyways, I heard it, but it's not loud enough or annoying enough to make me want to leave any location I was having fun at.

I swear you must have blown eardrums in order to NOT hear that whine. Here's a quick way to test your hearing. Download Audacity (check sourceforge) and in one of the menus there is an option to generate a tone. Choose a sine wave at 18-19 mhz. This is the range at which that audio file supposidly is. Play around with it and see what your maximum is. Everyone I know is able to hear it at that level of any age. I have no idea where this whole media spaz came from.
