A few years ago Wal-Mart tried to build a store in my town, near a historic area called Old Milford. Just about everyone was against it, because it would run out the small businesses and attract a certain sort of people. Let's just say they would be buying a lot of shotgun shells, flannel shirts, and Spam. Anyway, Wal-Mart proposed a new location further out of town and it just opened. The parking lot was packed, and you're truly was in there saving $50-75 on this week's groceries. I'd like to take the high-road and boycott them, but I'll save enough there to pay at least 1/2 of my upcoming car payment...

I have yet to get a carton of milk from Wal-Mart that doesn't leak. There's a reason why theirs is cheaper...

Oviedo, FL, where my ex-gf lives, neighbors of the area were against a Wal-Mart as it lowers the value of the area??? Does that even make sense?

I know Wal-Mart has everyday low prices and rush hours at 3am, but come on...

You really saved $50-75?! That's a good chunk of change.

Shut your mouth and think it out.

Yep. We spend on average about $150-250 per week on groceries, which I know is outrageous for a family of four. But we got our groceries at Wal-Mart for about $110! And I threw a bunch of extra shit in the cart just because it was so cheap and I was hungry...

Because they're a shitty company? There's about a thousand websites with more information.
They'll open in towns where there's tons of local business and drive everyone out of business. I don't have a huge issue with that, but what they'll do is sign things with the city saying they do't pay taxes for x amount of years, and then when the contract is up they close the store instead of paying, leaving the town in ruin.

Or this... Wal-Mart Is Focal Point Of Democrats' Health Bill
Quote:
Of Wal-Mart's 1.3 million full- and part-time employers, the lawmakers estimate that more than 600,000 do not have company insurance. Company critics say Wal-Mart wages are so low and the health premiums charged to employees so high, even some full-time employees qualify for government-funded health care.
They're just a company out to make money at any cost, they don't care about people, just numbers.

That said, I still shop there because with them driving everyone out of business it's not like I have alternatives.

so your pissed that they offer stuff at lower prices and drive all the expensive little guys out of business? they must treat they're employees real bad, i always see the old guy in a wheel chair greeting all the people as they come and go. so 50% of there employees don't get insurance. most places dont give insurance to part time employees anyways...

I refuse to buy anything at Wal-Marts.

I just hate them, they have the shittiest of everything, of course it has low prices.

Everytime I go, there is shit everywhere in the isles, employees dont speak english, and I just generally feel dirty being there.

I'd rather pay more but be supporting somebody with a soul.

It's not that 50% of their employees don't have health benefits. It's that almost every employee qualifies for Walmart benefits (the qualification for a full time employee is very low there so they can get away with giving you shit for hours to save on overtime), but the premiums are so high that the employees end up qualifying for government health care. This is bad because Walmart makes billions a year and thay're too fucking stingy to offer benefits that aren't total shit so we as tax payers get to pick up the bill because Walmart doesn't like to spend money, only make it.

Walmart blocked the building of a target in this town, mother fuckers, it would of been nice to be able to get some decent towels than the shitty walmart ones.

I make myself laugh.

That sucks, because Target is 10x better than Wal-Mart. There's one across the street from our new Wal-Mart coincidentally...

Walmart's buying power is so great that they submit their own specs to manufacturers with cut-rate components and shitty ingredients. Sure, that label may say sony, but look inside a component bought at wallyworld, then look at one bought at a neighborhood electronics dealer. About the only thing I get at wallmart is 10 dollar work jeans and DVD's when the price is right. Another thing about walmart, is that those big enormous profits they make, leaves the local area and far outweigh any amount of income brought into the area by the employees. Our walmart super center doesn't have better food prices than say a fred meyer. Walmart is pure evil to their employees also. I do not have a good opinion of the way they earn their money....they are not good for the locallities they infiltrate.

Among the many shitty things they do, the primary reason I don't go there is because of their policy of selling *only* censored CDs

Perfect. Fuck. Ok stay here and get... butt fucked by 12 Neanderthals. Bitch

theres soo many gripes about walmart and i wholeheartedly agree with them
i miss the days of lectures in class where we'd spend half the time talking about walmart's evil empire. brought alot of funneh and thought into it all..

but yea, walmart is a hazard, disgusting, censored material, nothing in stock, piss poor employees, piss poor quality of goods, attracts a certain group of people... BUT low prices.. i dunno.. i rather see personalized mom and pop stores in a town than walmart...

Mom&Pop's are a thing of the past, unfortunately. People gripe about quality, use of child labor, unfair labor practices and lack of real service; yet the walmart parking lot is always full....always. [/pun]. Myself, I believe it's my responsibility, that if I take on the "right-to-gripe", I have the duty to do something about it......anything less is a waste of air blowing out my pie-hole.
Don't get me wrong, I've got priors of wasting plenty of air.

I don't really like shopping at Wal-Mart, but it's 3 minutes away, and the next closest grocery store is 15 minutes away. My dad has worked for Smith's Food and Drug for 25+ years, and shopping at Wal-Mart is bad business for him.

Well, he used to care, until his boss fucked up and blamed it on him and got my dad demoted, losing $30,000 a year in total income. He could care less where anybody shops anymore (he even shops at Wal-mart sometimes).

/end rant

We had to do a business type meeting about Wal-Mart and Unions. Wal-Mart will fight to the death before a union gets organized.

I remember one article saying that the butchers in a Canadian Wal-Mart successfully started a Union then days later Wal-Mart closed the butcher shops deeming them not profitable and started imported preprocessed meat.

There was another article about night crews being locked in the store so they can't steal. One time a employee hurt himself and needed to go to the hospital. Well he had to wait until a manager came to unlock the building.
