eh im on a news hunt posting mood tonight. I dont usually start threads, but eh everyone's got to have a bit of change every now and again.

my threads dont suck too much do they (except the guttenberg quotes, i kinda regret that one)

I've never read any of those, but have been planning of reading 1984 and Brave New World. I recently read Fahrenheit 451 which i woulda thought would be there. Pretty much goes hand in hand with 1984 from what i've heard.

Shut your mouth and think it out.

yeah, there are a few titles I would have thought should be there, most notably farenheit 451, as well as Starship Troopers. maybe even 2001: a space oddessey or one of Arthur C. Clarke's other works, such as the Rama series (which is kickass, I need to pick it up again)

on a side note clarke is my fucking idol. seriously. the man is a genius,

how the hell is 1984 considered a geek book?

I figured the lord of the rings would be up there.

I figured the wheel of time series would be too.

Brave new world > 1984

wheel of time loses beacuse its never ending and repetitive. funny, I believe the whole series is an allegory of the story

(yay for SAT words)

This was on slashdot a while ago. My gripe with the list is the inclusion of "American Gods." The book wasn't all that great and has nothing to do with geeks. The only reason I found it even remotely interested is because all of the locals are based in Wisconsin and most of them are places I have been. I can imagine that having grown up elsewhere in the country would of made the book extremely dull.

Have you read any Iain M. Banks? Every single one of his sci-fi books is at least good, and most are excellent. I think Look to Windward is probably his best so far.

Neal Stephenson is one of my favourite authors - if you want something to keep you occupied for a while try his ~3000 page Baroque trilogy

I thought it was pretty interesting, but I agree it isn't good enough for a place on the list.

If I had to pick out some authors that are missing, I'd say Alistair Reynolds, Richard Morgan, Stephen Donaldson, and Tolkien.

I read the first three. I'll probably start hacking away at that list because I can get books for free now. Well, depends on the publication of the book.

1,2,3,6,7,8. But I want to give the other ones on that list a shot.

I have to hand it to you guys, sitting in one spot reading is not something I'm good at. Iv'e always had to be moving and doing more than one thing at a time. Even watching TV, I've got to be, at least, watching, and paying attention to the two attention monger cats on my lap....not one but two cats.

Neuromancer should be at the top of the list. Even though it didn't start the cyberpunk by itself (Do Andriods... actually the the movie did) it was the one that made the "movement" huge. otherwise, I have to say I haven't read many of the ones in the list. I've mostly read Clarke, Asimov's, authors of the like, but I moght start to pick up some of the books in the list...

I haven't heard of around 16 of those, and I consider myself a geek and a reader. The list is broken.
