| Party? Where? | I have no idea why I'm so fascinated with nuclear war and the after effects. Maybe its becuase no one ever talks about it, you never see any real IN DEPTH films about radiation sickness, or how exactly radiation effects the human body. I feel as though our governments are shielding us from this true horror of real life that we could possible face. I'm not paranoid or anything, but I think its important that everyone should know just how terrible nuclear war is, its more than just a bomb, the lasting effects are forever. Some things make it to TV, and when they do theres always some kind of 'controversy' about it. I don't see whats so controversial about educating us in survival or at the very least, preperation.... Shows like "the day after" and games like "fallout 1/2" are excellent examples of what this shit can do to our society as we know it. I found another series wich looks really good called threads Threads (1984) (TV) Of course its all done back in 80's but it gives a no bullshit look at what life would be like if we got fucked up the ass bigtime with a nuke. Shows like jericho add makeup and pretty faces to nuclear war, when in fact those are the last things you'll ever worry about if it were to be true. If you type into youtube the following search phrase "Threads part 1" minus the quotes, you'll find all the episodes to this miniseries. Its just like the day after, but of course the british outlook and not an american one. |

| Tweak Minion | I'm obsessed with Chernobyl, I think it's a amazing and sad place at the same time. I hope I can visit it one day. |

| Habitual line stepper | Whenever I think about nuclear holocaust I think of the Fallout series. Awesome fucking games. I hope there are more games released with the same theme in the future. I can't get enough of it. |

| outside the box! | I've got a strange fascination with nuclear detonations. Especially Ivy Mike and the hydrogen devices. Growing up with the threat of all out nuclear war wasn't all that fun, the paranoia was rampant in the early sixties. The effects of an all-out full scale exchange Is all theoretical, I hope it stays that way. Last edited by mistawiskas; 12-08-2006 at 05:55 AM.. |

| Keeper of the Timeline | Actually BrentN, I've seen movies (documentaries) about fallout, radiation poisonning, etc. They were mainly made in the 80s, because of the cold war and Tchernobyl accident. I think you'll have to dig for those 80s videos to see more. They were disgusting, like step to step photos of the effects of radiations. They shown a "normal" subject right after the blast (the guy was in the fallout zone) and then, progressive pics to show symptoms (hair falling, teeth falling, etc).. you know, like the pics to show the evolution of a crackwhore. Anyways, if I get my hands on it, I'll PM you for sure. Last edited by Lord Kain; 12-08-2006 at 03:39 PM.. |

| Globe Trekker | Here's another movie to check out if you can actually find it. It's a British animated film about an elderly couple trying to survive after the blast. It's got music by Roger Waters and is VERY disturbing. Good film though. When the Wind Blows (1986) |

Same way here, I did a visual speech about the whole situation, only 1 person out of about 15 knew about the whole incident, and that one 1 person was a 40 + year old lady from Romania.

| Saint, Church of Ryanism | I have done extensive studies on Chernobyl, 3-mile island, and also on the US Army nuclear disaster SL-1. SL-1 is a forgotton disaster that was pretty much kept under wraps by the military. I got an in depth overview on the accident as well as the results. I deal with radiation every day, including contamination and how to avoid it. I work directly with reactor plant components as well as "potentially radioactive" water. It's some pretty interesting stuff. As for radiation poisoning, there are very few documented studies that were available for us to use as referances. There were a few, though. I will look through our books at work to see what I can find on the effects of radiation poisoning. We also have information on what the death rates are for a given dose. Just as a quick overview, there are a lot of effects of radiation that can be expected. In light doses (can't remember the numbers), reddening of the skin is expected. This is from the rupturing of blood vessels in the skin, which is similar to a sun burn. As the exposure is increased, I know that the water contained in the outer layers of skin will begin to separate into water and hydrogen, giving large blisters and a jelly appearance to the skin. Once at that point, I can't remember the effects. I do remember that the cells throughout the lung tissue can do the same, and more or less cause asphyxiation, and also uncontrollable vomiting. You won't encounter hair loss immediately, either. That is an after-effect of the radiation (or so we were told). I'll try to do some research this Monday on the topic for you guys, and get back to you. Also, I can look up some more information on SL-1 from work if you guys are interested. ~Will Courtier~ |

| Indigenous Nudist | sweet, bigwill. i was gonna mention the day after, i got the dvd, but felt embarrased mentioning it, lol... Made for tv movie in the 80's. especially when that chick rode her bike into the area of chernobyl and took pictures that was GREAT! I wish she'd go back for more. That place is falling apart and eventually if it hasnt already start to release more radiation into the atmosphere?? I wanna know the future plans to keep it contained. |

Really, radiation is just parts of the atom being released (either in the form of neutrons, gammas, alphas, or betas). Gammas, for instance, don't really do anything. They generally pass through the human body without any interaction. As for alpha radiation (a positively charged helium nucleas), they are very dangerous. In fact, we are not allowed to handle any item emmiting alpha particles without full anti-contamination clothing. These are very large particles, and can generally be shielded by clothing on your body. These travel very slow (due to their large mass), and have a very high potential for reacting with the atoms in your body if they aren't shielded before contact. Neutrons (on the other hand), travel fairly slow, but are smaller in size. They are much more difficult to shield, and are the source of concern with nuclear disasters. They are more difficult to shield, but move slow enough to cause many interactions. I can't remember the dangerousness or characteristics of Beta radiation, but I'll try to look it up. This is really some scary shit when you consider it on an atomic level. It does some very screwy things (including splitting up water into hydrogen and oxygen, and completely transforming one element into another element). It can basically release gasses into your body (including blood stream), and change the organs in your body causing the body to reject them. It is amazing the power that I work around on a daily basis. I have looked up a lot of reasearch on 3-mile island and Chernobyl, but have nto saved any of my referances. I had some really cool timelines (in very good detail). They were hard to understand without some knowledge of nuclear power plants, but I will try to find them and decipher them for you guys. Just let me know if you have any questions on what happened from what you have seen, or if you are questioning the indications they had. I'll try to explain things to you. On a related note, another kick ass movie on nuclear emergencies is K-19 (The Widowmaker). It is about a nuclear Russian submarine that had a piping rupture on board, that released fission products throughout the entire boat. I believe that it killed 8-10 within days, and 20% of the crew died within 20 years due to cancer. It was completely covered up by the Russian government for a ton of years, and information has slowly filtered out since the making of the movie. ~Will Courtier~
