I just got back from a 1,700 mile trek to the Florida panhandle and back, and more than ever I hate the South. Every place we stopped in Alabama was scummy, run down, and staffed with fat, stupid, incompetents. Every order was slow and wrong, every person rude. Decatur was the lone standout, but Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery... They need to build a freeway overpass from Tennessee all the way to the Florida border.

see that's how I feel about the north. I love the south and hate the north. I think it's just luck though with the type of people you come across. I'm sure there are some good people in the north and i'm sure there are some bad people in the south (and visa versa obviously)

I'm a great Pacific northwest guy! I love it here, the people are the world's best and kickback is tempered with getting the job done.....more or less.

at least in washington (and I've lived north in Bellingham and near Seattle), most people are arrogant assholes that think they are smart but really aren't. people here could care less about even acknowledging that you exist. Drivers here are the worst I've experienced as well.

You might be saying "well just move" but i can't afford too and I just got a great job so I won't be leaving anytime soon.

you are correct. It boggles my mind that places are worse than here. I've driven through all the western states pretty much and Seattle area was the worst.

The south is the only region that hasnt grown the fuck up.. every other region of the usa has progressed and grown mature of politics and people perception..

Well, I can say this - at least the FEMA people were finally out of the hotels where we stayed. I don't know if you recall me talking about it from last year but the Marriott in Huntsville was completely overrun with trash. People running around the formal areas in shorts and no shirts on, screaming and fighting around the hotel late into the night. At one point I called the front desk and told them there was going to be trouble if they didn't silence those animals outside my room.

again, you are generalizing. I lived in the south for the first 13 years of my life. It was NOTHING like that. Then I moved up here. And it was like that here. It has nothing to do with south vs north. It just has to do with where you go. I happened to live in the Dallas area in the south (Plano to be exact). When I moved up to the NW first, it was in the country so it was very different.

I'm not trying to be an ass but it's because of people that generalize the south and say it's like that, that gives it a bad name. Sure, there are redneck people like you say in the south. I never saw one because I was in the city. People were very nice, friendly, and intelligent where I lived and traveled in the Dallas area. I moved to the north in the country and it was unbelievable the amount of stupid rednecks their were. And they STILL made fun of me because I was from Texas and they thought that Texans were all redneck cowboys and more stupid than they were.

Now I live in the city part of Washington and their are less rednecks but the people are still arrogant and rude for the most part.

I doubt the south will ever leave that image behind. It would be about impossible to when people have this image in their head already of what it is. Doesn't help that anything south related mentioned on TV is to make fun of it as some complete stupid redneck place.

Holy cow, Plano Texas (and really Texas for that matter) isn't at all what I'd call "South". The South I'm talking about is Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and parts of the neighboring states. Texas is actually a nice place to live, and has tons of cities in the "best" lists.

But anyway, the "South" as defined above is pretty lousy according to every meaningful metric I've ever seen. Wealth, education levels, crime rates, obesity rates, quality of living, etc.

ah well then you are ok then . I don't know though. I'm sure there are fine people in those states too. I haven't been to any of those states however. Most people think that Texas is like that too though. Having good 'ol Dubbya as the President doesn't help Texas's image either lol.

Every state has rednecks. You go to the Wal Mart here in Honolulu and it's like you stepped into Huntsville. Kinda like a roach motel. As for Australia, my wife is an Aussie citizen but Vietnamese by birth. She'll tell you all about racism, being spat on, having gook written on her high school locker. Remember the Midnight Oil song? Racism is universal.

edit: Of course I'm no better thinking everyone in the Ala Moana Wal Mart wearing a Lynyrd Skynyrd t-shirt is a racist.

i may generalize, but instances like MSP's adventures and mine are sure proof that the south and its major cities still havent grown up and out of the 50's, compared to other major cities of the usa.

im talking major cities here, any backwoods ANYWHERE you it'll be like "the south", but there should be no excuse in the cities and towns.

until all the old whiteys die out down there, its going to continue.

Alot of the "old whiteys" have died out down there. Maybe it's time to examine another common denominator. There are more than one creedo at work in the societal experiment known of as 'deep south".

The "old whiteys" have moved away and died, leaving behind what is there now. White trash and the great-great-great-great grandchildren of the slaves, who will apparently need another 250 years to get on their feet.
