It's on right now but I would like to here your opinions on it afterwards.

So far it's all emotional reinforcement of current policies and defending his position

We'll see if he adds any substance and a real game plan for the future.

who's with me?

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone ...

If I were President, I would fucking address the issue of the opposing party not clapping or standing during applause. The politics of that town make me sick. He could say something universally good like "...and we need to cloth the poor and teach kids to read" and the Democrats would sit there like a bunch of crybabies. It happens on the other side of the isle too when the Dems are in the Whitehouse, but it's just fucking rediculous.

Yeah, that is very very embaressing. I'm no political scientist, but I liked the speech. In the Democratic response, it's just pessimism. I wonder if this country will ever be run by moderates from both parties.

The democrats as a political party are just stupid when it comes to capitalizing on the presidents mistakes or weaknesses. Right now they have no back bone and are standing up to things they should be standing up for.

One thing I continually hate about bush is his view that america should be liberators. I'm all for freedom and human rights but untill this country is perfect I don't think we should be spending major expenses to bring democracy to places that we think need it.

Why should someone stand up and clap for something they disagree with?

We had a watch party at the student center on the 20 foot screen or whatever. I thought it was pretty interesting and Bush laid out some bold plans, but I'm waitint to see if they actually happen or if it is just talk.

I'm not saying they should, just that they won't stand or clap for anything the president says, whether they agree with it or not. It's just a silly political game and it gets on my nerves. Just like bringing Sheehan into the House with a political t-shirt on. It's pathetic Washington bullshit.

You must not have been watching, because there were MANY instances where both sides were standing up clapping.

I remember the same sort of seated stony silence from the Republicans during parts of Clinton's speeches too; it just makes me yawn with total non-issue boredom . The only thing I'd like to see would be a return to the Eisenhower days when both parties at least got on well enough to do what they could together, despite disagreements, with niether side trying to cut the other party completely out of the loop, and the Executive branch behaved in a very non-partisan manner.

I was watching on the big screen at the bar, but only casually. And yeah, they stood / applauded for some stuff. But in general it was just 1/2 of the room standing and it looked absurd. This has bothered me for years, not just the speech from last night.

Seemed like more Bush weakness in spots, half-hearted condemnation of Islamo fascists, though he mentioned "radical Islam", global economy junk, making excuses for illegal immigrants. He talks like many Americans are opposed to immigrants, sorry, but it's the "illegal" immigrants Mexico dumps over the border that many Americans oppose. The only thing missing was Vicente Fox at an adjacent podium. Bush delievered the speech well, but it seemed mushy to begin with. The democrats were lame as usual. So pretty much same old, same old.

Quote:
Misstatement of the Union The President burnishes the State of the Union through selective facts and strategic omissions.

Summary

The President left out a few things when surveying the State of the Union:

*
He proudly spoke of "writing a new chapter in the story of self-government" in Iraq and Afghanistan and said the number of democracies in the world is growing. He failed to mention that neither Iraq nor Afghanistan yet qualify as democracies according to the very group whose statistics he cited.
*
Bush called for Congress to pass a line-item veto, failing to mention that the Supreme Court struck down a line-item veto as unconstitutional in 1998. Bills now in Congress would propose a Constitutional amendment, but none have shown signs of life.
*
The President said the economy gained 4.6 million jobs in the past two-and-a-half years, failing to note that it had lost 2.6 million jobs in his first two-and-a-half years in office. The net gain since Bush took office is just a little more than 2 million.
*
He talked of cutting spending, but only "non-security discretionary spending." Actually, total federal spending has increased 42 percent since Bush took office.
*
He spoke of being "on track" to cut the federal deficit in half by 2009. But the deficit is increasing this year, and according to the Congressional Budget Office it will decline by considerably less than half even if Bush's tax cuts are allowed to lapse.
*
Bush spoke of a "goal" of cutting dependence on Middle Eastern oil, failing to mention that US dependence on imported oil and petroleum products increased substantially during his first five years in office, reaching 60 per cent of consumption last year.

i cant watch. If they took out the claping and ovations every 30 seconds then i migh ttune in. They could make this an hour instead of 2 fucking hours long. After the first 5 minutes, when they clapped and gave a standing ovation for minutes, then did it again when he took the stand, and they finally did it one more time before he even said 5 words. Unwatchable.
