I agree...

Quote:
"Reuters is reporting that Universal Media Disc, Sony's PSP-only movie format, is about to kick the bucket. While the discs' novelty factor resulted in strong sales shortly after the PSP's May 2005 launch, interest rapidly dropped and movie companies are no longer interested in producing titles. From the article: "Universal Studios Home Entertainment has completely stopped producing UMD movies, according to executives who asked not to be identified by name. Said one high-ranking exec: 'It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb -- like Blu-ray."
i hope blu-ray isnt a bomb tho :'(

"It is good that war is terrible, otherwise we would become over fond of it." - Robert E. Lee.

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."

Good, lamest idea ever.

Isn't there SW that transcodes DVDs into a format that the PSP can play?

This is news? Of course it was going to fail. It's like the "movies" that came out for the GBA. A joke...

What they should have done was package it with regular dvds and charged a couple of bucks more for it as opposed to selling it by itself and for more than a normal dvd.

No one gives a shit about XXX: State of the Union or Jet Li's latest piece of shit action movie. It was price and quality that killed it. It could've been good though.

Boo-Fucking-hoo, of course it was doomed. They charged something damn close to full price for a disc that would only work on a PSP, I saw that coming. Yeah, it's cool, but as stated it's only a novelty.

That being said, I still think the PSP is dope as hell.

Yeah, the UMD format for movies was stupid. Who wants to buy something that they can only watch on one player? ivwshane has the right idea, they should have bundled them together or something. I like the fact that I have Spiderman 2, too bad I can't also watch it in the comfort of my living room. Maybe if they'd created some TV output device for the PSP so you could watch UMDs on your TV it might have done a bit better.

This was obvious. Paying $5-10 more to watch DVDs on a shitty portable screen instead of my house with surround sound and a television? Where do I sign?!

that's harsh and inaccurate.

it's like having a portable dvd player, with impeccable screen quality. the sound isn't much unless you have decent headphones, and the screen size isn't exactly desireable. but I think the UMDs are excellent.

I do, however, agree that it was stupid to charge as much as they did. Some great ideas that I'd never thought of were presented in this thread:

1) Bundling the UMD with the actual DVD and chraging a reasonable amount more. --That would even make me buy more DVDs than I do now. Honestly, I buy maybe 7-10 DVDs a year, and that is pushing it big time (including birthday/christmas gifts in that number). If I could get the UMD packaged with it, I'd at least double my movie buying habit. Main point being I don't have a portable DVD player, as I imagine a vast majority of PSP owners don't, too.

2) a media output cable/port to send AV to a television/stereo. --I can't believe they didn't design that into the PSP. Though, I'm trying to think of a port that would fit into the PSP's sexy design. This would be pretty useful on the go, as well. In that people could use their PSP with Hotel TV's. Granted most hotel TV's don't have RCA input, and you'd likely have to bring an RF transmitter; or whatever the box is that converts RCA to coaxial cable. Still, be pretty nice for travelling. COuld even use it to play music through the TV speakers at a louder volume.

ivwshane, nameless: you guys should have been on the development team.

They sell portable DVD players for about $50 that have better (and larger) screen quality than PSP. Everything I said was true, people usually want to watch movies in their home, not on the go. When people are out of their house, they usually don't want to sit there and watch a movie...

Or, because:

a) My house's power is on the same grid as the highway, any storms and drunk drivers take out the power for 2-3 hours at a time.

b) My landlord's brother-in-law is a fucktard that didn't pay the hyrdo bill.

The portable DVD players have ~4 hours battery life and can play from a car cigarette lighter, or charge the battery via that same adapter.

Mmm, bacon.

The best part about PSP is how much faster ripped games are... UMD speed blows ass compared to a Memory Stick.

Mac Mini 1.25 @ 1.42
1GB RAM
40GB + 250GB
17" Dell LCD

Hahahahaha.. so fucking true. I just got a 2gb memory stick in the mail yesterday. I can finally play some games for this thing. So far Ridge Racer is pretty cool and so is Syphon Filter.
