I've been working at my "new" job now since July. I've been on quite a few training calls (where someone else trains me) and that stopped in like October/November. Then I've done quite a few on my own. I've made my mistakes (which is going to happen) and I've seen quite a bit of Western Canada thus far.

So, it came as quite a surprise that this upcoming week, I get to travel and train two guys at a couple of installs. One of these guys trained me, but since I've been so active and stuff in the company, I technically know more than him. The other guy is newer than me by like 3 months. However, I think I'm mainly going for him because he has yet to come back from an install without totally blowing it.

I feel good that the company recognizes my ability when it comes to the software and hardware we sell/support/train on, and I'm not letting it go to my head. However, I feel kind of strange going out and watching on these people to make sure everything goes okay, especially if my supervisor calls/emails me to see how the one guy is doing. I don't want to potentially have this guy fired but at the same time, I don't want him bringing down the company as well.

Anyone else been put in a situation likes this before?

Yeah actually. At my last job I went from being a regular agent on the phone, to training a class. It was fun, but definitely challenging. To train 30+ people that have to meet certain requirements and pass hard ass tests is a struggle. Luckily all of them passed and I did a good job. I dont work there anymore, I hate the job and the company, but it was a good experience and I now know I can handle basically a classroom.

I get the "break him in" and 'train them" routine from my boss all the time.
I just look at him as though he's clueless and say..."OK, I'll cram 30 years of experience and knoledge into a weeks time .....do you think their brains can keep up?" They stopped asking. Seems like the boss's were thinking that my job was like flippin' burgers or something.

When I was perforating in the oil field I had to train others to handle explosives, radioactive sources and run Linux. I would have one trainee at a time who would ride along with me and basically shadow me at work until he could do the basics of my job (about 3 months).

I'm trying to evolve.

After a while you'll be able to tell if a noob will be able to learn within the first day, generally I have a pretty good idea of their ability to learn in the first hour. Some folks are just stupid. Go with your gut. FIRE his ass.

yeah, in WB's and my line of work, you can pretty easily tell if a guy's just talking a good game or really knows the stuff, the first couple of minutes they have a tool in their hands.

I'm bad at training people because I expect too much of them. I don't necessarily expect them to be 100% perfect but I do expect some sort of commitment.

The thing is, this one guy knows what he's doing. I think he just gets panicky or something after awhile. It's kind of weird to say the least. Especially when he's in our main office in Calgary, and I'm several hundred kilometers away in Regina. He's got the benefit of having everyone else around him to help him out, while I have to figure out a lot of stuff on my own.

I won't be the one firing, thank god. If I have to give a report, I will.
