Older story, saw it on Digg.

The Earth-like Gliese 581C circles a star in the constellation of Libra that is cooler than our sun. Photograph: European Southern Observatory/AP

Scientists have discovered a warm and rocky "second Earth" circling a star, a find they believe dramatically boosts the prospects that we are not alone.

The planet is the most Earth-like ever spotted and is thought to have perfect conditions for water, an essential ingredient for life. Researchers detected the planet orbiting one of Earth's nearest stars, a cool red dwarf called Gliese 581, 20 light years away in the constellation of Libra.

Measurements of the planet's celestial path suggest it is 1½ times the size of our home planet, and orbits close to its sun, with a year of just 13 days. The planet's orbit brings it 14 times closer to its star than Earth is to the sun. But Gliese 581 burns at only 3,000C, half the temperature of our own sun, making conditions on the planet comfortable for life, with average ground temperatures estimated at 0 to 40C. Researchers claim the planet is likely to have an atmosphere. The discovery follows a three-year search for habitable planets by the European Southern Observatory at La Silla in Chile.

"We wouldn't be surprised if there is life on this planet," said Stephane Udry, an astronomer on the project at the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland.

Two years ago, the same team discovered a giant Neptune-sized planet orbiting Gliese 581. A closer look revealed the latest planetary discovery, along with a third, larger planet that orbits the star every 84 days. The planets have been named after their star, with the most earthlike called Gliese 581c. The team spotted the planet by searching the "habitable zone".

We're a virus, and we infect and destroy anything we touch.

More so for Americans.

The Earth is fucked up?

*sigh*

"We're talking about opportunity here. Nobody arguing for more upward mobility and help for the poor believes that every single poor person will be helped in a single generation, if ever. I think that most of us are looking for programs and ideas that serve to help people who want the help and have the drive to get themselves out of poverty. We're looking at potential ideas to create equal access, not equality."

Why are these stories accompanied by the obligatory a) anti-religious remarks, and b) self-loathing? I don't care about the other issues, I just want pictures of this stuff, and wish we had far more cash to develop new search abilities so we can learn a lot more about what is around us. Plus we need to go back to the moon, there I said it.

Too many of our hard earned tax dollars....you know, the dollars we trade for 1/4-1/3 of our lives for.....go into the warchest and to support the hidden agandas of the NWO. There, I said that.
The world/galaxy shown to us by Roddenberry, was a hypothetical one. One that would come about if we, the hunan race were to rise above our petty, childish, bullshit and reach for something actually meaningfull. *It'll never happen. The powers that be prevent it and will fight it tooth and nail
because without petty conflicts, we'll see what is actually taking place. the smokescrene of conflict, economy and racial tensions works so well, that it's going to be the end of humanity. As with the brain I think with....it thinks it can kill me and go on living. the fall of the USA is in the plans and, moreso, already happening by design. You youngsters better plan on what you're going to do when it happens. the one's who survive, are going to be those who know how to do the basic trades. IE: fixing things, food growing, carpentry/shelter building and repair, mechanics, McGuyverisms, defense, and
survival skills. The great depression will seem like goodtimes compared to what is in store for USA. Artsy-fartsy stuff will be a luxury that not even the most affluent will be able to justify. This is a great time to learn all you can
about what exactly it takes to survive a third world existence. If I'm wrong, and i hope to hell i am, what's been lost by soaking up every single bit of survival knowledge you can? i'm here to tell you.......the combine are at opur doors....matter of fact, they have been amungst us for along time now. i for one, have learned how to survive, I can live in the wilderness if need be. When economy fails and third world status is reached, i have the trades/skills vital to human survival and the rich that keep me in servitude will compete for the services i can perform. The basics....food, water and shelter. The scenario I just outlined is in the realm of possibility. The civilized world (yeah right) is so messed up, that total anihilation, by our own hands, may be the only way it's ever going to get better. Take a look around, look at history, wouldn't hurt to learn all you can now, it may just come in handy, or at least, bring a bit of peace of mind when the shit hits the fan. I probably won't be here for it when it happens................... but, I'm confident it's on it's way.
Label me with tin foil, just realize that I care about every last one of you guys and gals and hope you, at least open your eyes to the direction everything is headed. there is a prophesy in more than one religeon more antient than recorded history that discribes fire from the sky.

Revelation 21:1
Selections from Moses 1 of the Pearl of Great Price:
Quote:
“And calling upon the name of God, he [Moses] beheld his glory again, for it was upon him; and he heard a voice, saying: Blessed art thou, Moses, for I, the Almighty, have chosen thee, and thou shalt be made stronger than many waters; for they shall obey thy command as if thou wert God.

“And it came to pass, as the voice was still speaking, Moses cast his eyes and beheld the earth, yea, even all of it; …

“And he beheld also the inhabitants thereof, …

“And he beheld many lands; and each land was called earth, and there were inhabitants on the face thereof.

“And it came to pass that Moses called upon God, saying: Tell me, I pray thee, why these things are so, and by what thou madest them?

“And behold, the glory of the Lord was upon Moses, so that Moses stood in the presence of God, and talked with him face to face. And the Lord God said unto Moses: For mine own purpose have I made these things. Here is wisdom and it remaineth in me.

“And by the word of my power, have I created them, which is mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth.

“And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose. …

“But only an account of this earth, and the inhabitants thereof, give I unto you. For behold, there are many worlds that have passed away by the word of my power. And there are many that now stand, and innumerable are they unto man; but all things are numbered unto me, for they are mine and I know them.

“And the Lord God spake unto Moses, saying: The heavens, they are many, and they cannot be numbered unto man; but they are numbered unto me, for they are mine.

“And as one earth shall pass away, and the heavens thereof even so shall another come; and there is no end to my works, neither to my words.

“And now, Moses, my son, I will speak unto thee concerning this earth upon which thou standest; and thou shalt write the things which I shall speak.

“And in a day when the children of men shall esteem my words as naught and take many of them from the book which thou shall write, behold, I will raise up another like unto thee; and they shall be had again among the children of men—among as many as believe.”

I'll be the first to say that I've only read select pieces of the Bible, I haven't been able to justify reading it in its entirety yet. But I was always under the impression, that clearly in the text, what God created here on Earth was the only life amongst all of the stars/heavens.

The understanding and comprehension of the time, dictated the deciphering of
visions and thoughts.
It was written by humans who were not even privy to what the moon actually was. Then it was translated and changed with each sect and denomination to justify certain views and ideologies. that's what humans do, we justify and rationalize whatever it takes to get us what we think it is we need or want. The king james version was translated more than six hundred years ago when words had different meanings that they do today...example:
What does the discription "a shambles" mean to you ? (as in: his room was in a shambles") back then, a "shambles" was literally a 'meat market'. When yesterdays' understanding is used to define today, of coarse things are going to be confused and inacurate.

There are certain truths to almost all religeons. The principals, the core values and morals can be identicle. But the perversions of those truths create friction and conflict. This is what Lennon sang about in the song 'Imagine"...."no religeons too".

If you're a 'moon landing hoax' theorist, you have alot more confidence in our government than I. Our government couldn't even buy the right kind of
emergency shelters for hurricane victims, let alone keep that kind of secret.
