He built the screen from 5 pieces of plumbing tubing, 6 joints for the corners and sides, and some material he bought online. I bet he spent $50 on the whole project. Drilled a bunch of holes, cut stuff with the Sawzall, and assembled it into a nearly perfect screen. It looks much better in person than in the pictures here. He hasn't completed the corners yet.

He bought the Sharp DL-500 projector on Ebay for around $600. It was factory refurb, sealed in the package. Looks great in 1080i and 720p on the Playstation 3. Gran Turismo Prologue looks incredible.

He built the projector mount from an LCD-TV wall mount bracket he bought at the hardware store for $25. It works well.

The equivalent TV size is 120" measured corner to corner in 16:9. Some pics of standard def TV from my HP 3.2 MP camera that once fell in a lake (ignore the living room mess, it's all in progress ):

Once I've got the steering wheel rig finished I'll take some pics of Blu-Rays, Gran Turismo or GTA.

Looks pretty nice. Get those speakers off of the ground and in the proper positions! Ugh. I've become a stickler about that shit. GET THEM AWAY FROM THE WALLS. You're building hellish bass issues by having them where they are at.

Most of them aren't even hooked up yet. Just the left and right ones are, which are away from the wall and on stands.

I need lots of cables!!

Very creepy. I'm a vegetarian even! The weird thing was I couldn't see what was on the screen. I took the pics with a timer so I just had light shining in my eyes.

I'm still waiting on the price for 50" 1080p flat panels to come down....

look at the 3 pics.

a black man
a hand
a commercial for KFC

All I see is a black hole, and sooner or later they’re going to suck each one of us into it. But when they come for me, I'm going to take as many of them with me as I can.

He is telling us that black people and kfc go hand in hand.

That's really cool but you look like you want to strangle somebody. Why does everybody look so menacing around here? Does IT do that to people?

What did he make it out of? Does it need to be cleaned over time to keep the image at it's best? It's pretty slick.

It was the end of a long day and I had a bright ass projector in my eye! Normally I'm a more cheery person.

He made it out of some "rubberized screen material" (Rubberized canvas?) like this: 92"/100"/106"/110"/115" MOVIE PROJECTOR SCREEN MATERIAL - eBay (item 350077158408 end time Jul-14-08 07:56:24 PDT)

I don't think it needs to be cleaned, but I imagine it could be cleaned pretty easily. The tubing he built the frame from is strong but lightweight. The whole screen weighs almost nothing and is screwed to the wall by the corner joints.

Once upon a time I intended to have a dual projection system like that, but having a woman and children in the house have made it pretty impractical. Until I can get a house with a dedicated media room it's just not going to happen.

How much are the replacement bulbs these days? That, and the lifespan of the bulbs, were two major reasons I never went down that road.

From here:
Life: 3000 hours

It's on at most 2 hours per day, but usually only a couple times per week, because we're not home too often. I bet the bulb will outlast the technology... he'll almost definitely have something better by that time.

The replacements are around $300 I think. For the price of this projector (550+ shipping), it's still a lot cheaper than a TV. I think the price of bulbs and lifetime is blown way out of proportion.
