Grandmaster Flash was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is it just me, or is there something very wrong with that sentence? This is almost as bad as when Rolling Stone Magazine put the Olsen Twins on the cover...

Rock Hall welcomes*R.E.M., Van Halen, Smith - CNN.com

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- Two of the biggest rock bands of the 1980s took different paths to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday -- indie favorites R.E.M. with a happy reunion and party band Van Halen with a fragmentary turnout.
Otherwise, the hall took on a New York flavor with the girl group sound of Spanish Harlem's the Ronettes, downtown poet Patti Smith and South Bronx's Grandmaster Flash, the first hip-hop act so honored.

Me too. Don't get me wrong. He's just not a rock act, and has no place in the Rock Hall.

Um, sure they do.

True Hip-hop is the essence of what Rock and Roll used to be, breaking from the cultural musical norm, being creative and exploring new styles and sounds, and bringing an either underground or counter-culture movement into the forefront. Hip-hop is far more influential to the evolving sound of music today than Rock is now and likely will be for the near future.

I dont really buy that, its a cop out. Thats like saying anything groundbreaking and counter culture is rock and roll at heart.

Yet, theres still this whole thriving rock and roll genre.....

i watched the rock and roll hall and fame and though it was horrible. Only 2 members showed up for van halen, sammy and michael anthony. revelvet revolver played for them, i dont know what the hell that was.

As far as grandmaster flash, I dont really think he should have been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame.

IMHO:
That's like saying it's OK to induct a basketball player into the baseball hall of fame. While the two are 'sports', one doesn't equate to the other.

i would disagree with that. while the two are both sports, they are markedly different activities, while grandmaster flash and say, van halen both recorded albums, got up on stage and preformed, influenced the way music was thought about. i would not say these activities were as dissimilar as hitting a ball with a bat outside, and drubbling and totally different kind of ball indoors. while they are both classified in a sports genre, they are nowhere near the same activity. throw grandmast flash up on stage in place of vanhalen, he would be ok to do a set, but throw a baseball player - doesn't matter who - onto a bball court with the pros and see what happens.

No.

If you follow that line of logic to it's natural conclusion then ALL forms of music that followed rock and roll should be considered for the Rock Hall. And for that matter all music today should be inducted into the Prehistoric Caveman Music Hall of Fame...

I'm not knocking hip hop, it's just a completely different genre and it's inclusion is illogical.

Illogical if you view it by genre and not by the spirit of the Hall of Fame and the impact the artists in have had on the music scene.

(This is the best equivalent I can come up with so don't read into anymore than is needed.)

Denying Hip-hop artists a place in an institution that celebrates and commemorates breakthrough artists is like not allowing a white/Latino/Asian/any other race into an institution that commemorates the furthering the acceptance of the African-American culture just because they're not African-American. Sure they don't fit the model that the institution is celebrating, but they have done just as much for it as any other person already in it.

Hip-hop has changed the way Rock is done today, for better or worse.

True, but there have been examples of country, classical, etc that have been influential to rock and visa versa. But you don't see Willie Nelson or Yo-Yo Ma getting inducted. I don't think this has anything to do with race actually.

Here a good analogy I just thought of - pancakes should be inducted into the Breakfast Meat Hall of Fame. One trip to I-Hop and it's clear to anyone that pancakes have been very influential in the field of breakfast, and while not technically a meat should be honored anyway...

I bet he even makes fun of Sparkling Wiggles too.

As for Country music in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....

Quote:
Music halls of fame

* Alabama Music Hall of Fame
* Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame
* Blues Hall of Fame
* Canadian Music Hall of Fame
* Country Music Hall of Fame
* Dance Music Hall of Fame
* Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame
* Gospel Music Hall of Fame
* Grammy Hall of Fame (for recordings)
* Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (for people)
* International Polka Music Hall of Fame
* Nashville Songwriters Foundation
* Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
* Songwriters Hall of Fame
* UK Music Hall of Fame
* Vocal Group Hall of Fame
They already have a Hall of Fame. (Note: who doesn't have a Hall of Fame yet?)

Also:
Quote:
Early influences

Early Influences includes artists from earlier eras, primarily country, folk, and blues, whose music inspired and influenced rock and roll artists. The most recent of this category to be inducted were Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday in 2000.
Shit, we should kick those last two out, they aren't Rock and Roll!

No wait....

Quote:
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a museum in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, dedicated to recording the history of some of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, and other people who have in some major way influenced the music industry, particularly in the area of rock and roll.
Now, this is all from Wikipedia, so anyone (even me! ) is able to add their opinions and what not in, but I think that all of that is either factual or based on the popular opinion and purpose of the Hall of Fame.

Then, in that case, it should better be known as the 'Music Hall Of Fame'.
I don't concider 'new age', country/western, blues, chill out, or even the polka
rock and roll. But they have all greatly contributed to the evolution of music.
Rap is cool, the only thing I dislike about it is the glorification of gang mentality and violence. IMO: A person needs to be mindful of what they allow to get inside their heads....GIGO. But for the drum/bass and scratchin....that's cool stuff, still isn't what I concider rock music any more than I concider Buck Owens to be a rock music artist. There should just be a "music hall of fame".

Well, I'll be damned. There it is in black and white, even though I still don't agree with it. Run DMC should get a nod in that case as well. I mean hell, this album was pretty much a rock album.

And as for black people, I like them. I like them very much...
