So for spring break I joined one of the two Habitat for Humanity trips. We went to the town of Guyton Georgia, about 45 minutes or so northwest of Savannah. Coming from Canton, NY near Canada this was a long drive. The group was 15 large, 13 females, me, and one other guy.

Essentially the trip was to spend 2 days driving down, spend 5 days working on the house and spend two getting back to school, spending a day in Washington DC. Here is the drive, all ~1,200 miles, ~20+ hours each way:

So Saturday morning we packed up two vans, one 15 passenger Econoline and one Chevy mini van:

Most of the group here at a gas station, on the way down:

On the way down, we slept on the floor of some church in Virginia (I think…) and our final destination was the Savannah Baptist Assembly. That is where we slept while working on the job site:

Here is the place, we called it “The Compound.” The pastor told us (me and the other guy) that we were allowed in the girl’s cabin when playing cards or reading the bible. This is the super religious south for sure.

This is the house we were working on. The lot the local chapter had bought had two houses they had already built, this was number three and the foundation was about to be poured for the fourth. Each house is fairly small of course, and is built for around $40,000. Every morning, we would have someone come and do the devotion, read from the bible, say amen and such:

What we did during our time was hang sheetrock, mud, and sand. Here is people doing a closet:

More sheetrock:

Being the south, it was supposed to be warm. Nope, not this week it was not. We went to the beach, but it was cold, overcast and windy. As a result Dan (the other guy on the trip) and I were the only ones that went in:

Dinners were provided by a place called Hortons. Southern cookin fo sho. Everything was deep fried, BBQ or came with some kind of meat. Green beens with bacon? Yep. Lima means and pork? That’s how they do it down there:

Inside of the Wal-Mart. The obvious cultural center of this part of Georgia. It was only my 4th time in one ever, and I had to buy something. Yes, I died a little inside. Those green beads were for St Patties day:

Back to work the next day. This is the woman who the house is being built for. Single mother, full time manager of a Burger King, shortly after this picture was the group hug:

While working on the site, lunches were provided by the Guyton Woman’s Club. A sort of old ladies group for subservient southern women who love the bible and cook for their man. We got to pray before every meal there too! When asking about St. Lawrence: “Uh, is that a real liberal school?” Hahaha… Nice people though:

That night we went in a “Ghost tour” of the historic district of Savannah. It sucked, but it was nice to walk around the city and see the area:

Great old house:

Mudding the joints the next day on the site:

And we got most of the work done by Wednesday. The site leaders (Jim and Richard) were impressed with our work:

Just hanging out in the main cabin that night, eating, playing games, talking:

Breakfast was provided by Hortons as well. Grits, eggs, bacon. Typical southern food I guess:

They gave us Thursday off for St Patricks day. So we went back into Savannah for their big parade, this is just us wandering down the streets before hand:

More cool old buildings:

Part of the parade in action. They claim it is the second biggest St Patrick’s day parade in the country second only to NYC, but I somehow doubt it… Anyways here is a section:

Hey, we really are in the south!

We then spent like $250 on lunch. Thanks for the money, student government

That night I sat around and made abstract art! Using the face of the clock, nails people had in their pockets from the jobsite, and shells and sand from the beach:

At the site on Friday, our last day of working:

Then Lindsey and Leah decided to mud wrestle. These are two of the funniest people I have ever met, it was great fun to be with them on the trip.

This is Richard, the head of the project:

I told her to show me her warrior face. Leah with war paint from the mud wrestling, Lindsey in the back of the van so as not to get the seats muddy:

Cleaning and packing up, about to leave the Compound:

Some of the ladies made signs for the vans:

We then tried to reenact the Forrest Gump scene where he is running down the road, because it looked sort of like this road:

Well there is one way to do a fence post:

The final lunch at the Womans Club before hitting the road north:

On the way we stopped at South of the Border. Wow, what a place. The strangest tourist trap ever. The place is huge, old, super tacky and one can not capture it in pictures or words:

It is like a small town that looks like this:

The other vans sign said “show us your boobs.” (made by the ladies in that van) They later regretted it when all they got was a mooning from Dan:

We then got into Washington DC late night and checked in to the hotel. They didn’t know what to do with us when we rolled up in a 15 passenger van that we had written all over in mud:

Took the subway from Pentagon City (we could see the Pentagon from our window) into the Mall area of DC:

You may know what this building is:

The Reflection Pool was empty, boo. Lincoln Memorial in the background:

Vietnam Memorial:

Korean War Memorial, also without water in the fountain:

The WWII Memorial was also dry:

Went to the Modern Art Museum:

The drive from DC to Canton:

And finally back to school for the remaining 6 weeks ( I think…?) of the year. Less snow then when we left, that’s for sure:

I’d have to say this trip was probably the most fun I’ve had all year at school. The group got along really well; there were no arguments, fights, or anything. We all got to do some good work for the community, make new friends and see a lot of country in the process. I very well may do one of the Habitat trips next spring break too.

So that was my trip.

Looks like you had fun

All I see is a black hole, and sooner or later they’re going to suck each one of us into it. But when they come for me, I'm going to take as many of them with me as I can.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Very admirable way to spend a spring break....and you even get to actually remember it....unlike alot of other spring breakers. My hat is definately off to you, well done.

You might find this hard to believe, but I was a Boy Scout and Red Cross volunteer once upon a time. Then I turned to the dark side...

Meh, looks pretty boring. I'm sure it was fun, but you've done better ninefiddy.
