I think these are carbon filters, but what's the white stuff? Spores?

Nah, it's some compund of soduim that takes the shit out of the water, it could be activated carbon as well.

ugh, i'm planning on getting a brita for when i'm vegas cause the city water is DISGUSTING. now that inside of the filter is disgusting too.

Aquafina? But that shit in the filter isn't a big deal. It's just carbon and some other chemical pellets. They chemically treat the hell out of our water, so I'm sure the stuff that comes out of the tap or in bottles goes through similar shit.

It is most definitely not sodium. Sodium when it hits water is highly explosive. Chloride is a deadly poisoness gas. Put them together and you get SodiumChloride aka salt.

it is zeolite, it removes ammonia from the water, ammonia is in all tap water in the form of chlorine and chloramines. It removes other things but that is the major one.
