I always thought that on a 4 lane highway that only the lane behind the bus had to stop. Today I drove past a school bus and the driver honked at me. At the next light he pulled up behind me and was on the radio, apparently reporting my license number. I came home and looked it up online and apparently on a non-divided highway it should look like this:



My question is, can they issue a ticket based on a bus driver calling me in? I think it’s a $250 fine for the first offense… I really didn't think I was breaking the law!

Most school buses give like 100 ft warning before they come to a complete halt for both sides of traffic to see. If you passed, they do have the right to report you. Don't know if they'll issue a ticket off the bat though.

I pass them all the time. I know what the law is for, but to have all four lanes stopped on a highway or big road is retarded.

stories started circulating about kids getting swiped by passing cars when they (in retarded fashion) ran out in front of the bus to cross the street. naturally, people went nuts and had this law instated to protect their dumbass kids and make up for shitty parenting.

i think it varies by state, but teh one i'm familiar with if the road is divided 4 lane, you don't need to stop if you're coming the opposite way, if it isn't divided you need to stop. all this in case the kids need to jaywalk... i mean cross the street to get to their house. and i fully understand why it's like that, considering some of the dick-drivers that have sped up to pass me only to cut me off and take the next exit. why bother passing someone that's going a decent speed if you're about a half mile from your exit? i'll never know.

Aye. We had a truck full of illegal mexicans run over a little girl about two miles away from my house a few years back. They ran for it, since they were illegal.

Another excellent reason that there should be more strict controls over the borders and hunting down illegals.

Anywho, I don't think you can get ticketed by having the bus driver report you. Its pretty much his word against yours. If you get a citation, just go to court and ask them to PROVE it.

Kids running into traffic isn't bad parenting. Its little kids being kids ..... the teenagers are just being assholes though.

In NewYork yes... all our buses have camera on them anywa... inside looking at all the kids and i'm sure if you drove by they would be able to see you out the window

Well, I just feel pretty stupid. I've been doing this for years and would always get pissed at the "dumb" drivers that would stop because they didn't know the law...

Oh well, now I know. I'll obey it, even though I think it's pretty stupid. Buses on four lane roads have to drop the kids off on the side of the street on which they live.

Edit: Looks like Ohio law only requires the two lanes nearest the bus to stop when there are 4 or more lanes. I was wrong either way though...

usually the bus driver's word is good enough. Just like a cop can't "prove" you were speeding by video tape or something.

Meh, if you do get a fine... they'll usually let it go the first time. Seeing as it's a very out-of-the-way law. At least that's the way they do it here.

As said previously, only if you're traveling in the same direction as the bus on a divided highway is when you stop. The big "STOP" sign should give it away. If you don't see a sign, the bus driver has screwed up (but still don't pass) or, your passing on the right which in an of itself usually is illegal...........especially since the bus is always in the curb lane!! Don't worry about the bus driver calling you in. A police officer cannot cite you for a minor misdemeanor traffic violation if he himself doesn't witnesses the infraction.............unless it's a collision. It's not based upon someone else word.

The police will not cite "Joe Blow" because you called them and said he was going faster than you. They have to physically witness it.

Hope this clears some things up.

One more thing. If a bus stops on a divided highway as shown in the above pics and a kid crosses that highway.......the child jaywalked. No one is supposed to cross a divided highway.

I'm not worried about the ticket. Hell, I've been doing this shit for years so Jah knows I deserve one.

That said, does anybody else ever heckle the slow kids getting on/off the bus? You know the ones where the bus is stopped for like 2 minutes while the kids load or unload? I drive past those kids and will say stuff like "Hurry up next time you little bastards!" I'm going to hell...

yeah when people blast past school buses i get pissed, ill usualy ride their ass and flip them off accordingly, same thing when people dont pull over for emergency vehicles
