So I just got a new ipod nano video (fucking awesome, btw) and a pair of Sony EX71's, but to complete my aural trio of aweomeness, I'm embarking on a new project:

How to Build the CMoy Pocket Amplifier

I've already got the parts, minus the op-amp, the battery clip, and the volume control switch (might leave it out...the blue velvet is 16 effin' bucks). Anyway, hopefully I'll post some pics when I'm done. I don't have much experience with sodlering, so this is going to be a huge learning experience.

anyone have any tips?

dongsmattdev's

Gamercard

This is something I've always wanted to do.

I lost motivation and just bought an expensive amp.

I think to add a wall jack it would be better to use a transistor or FET that would allow the power to go through when there is a battery and would stop the flow when there is a wall plug in installed.

Just watch your hearing. Those little amps make me nervous, I don't have any headphones that require them. My Sony MDR-V600s sound plenty loud to me.

I'm not sure how lucky you are going to get in making this amp work on the first try if you don't have any experience.

My best advice is to make sure you can solder a good clean joint before beginning. Make every joint as nice as you can so that you don't have to go back and troubleshoot loose wires etc.

good luck!

I am going to check each connection as I make it, so hopefully troubleshooting won't be a big problem. I'm not looking to use this for the volume, it's a learning project, and I've got some old Koss KSC75's lying around, and I hear that an amp really wakes'em up.

since it'll be portable, I don't really want a wall jack. plus it'd be alot more work.

If I can get this sucker to work pretty good, I really want to try the Mini^3

My advice from building countless circuits, plan it out completely on your pc board before you solder anything. That and make the joints as small as possible and don't clip anything until you're done. OP Amps like to overheat when you're soldering, so be careful with them.

well I just finished it and I got damn lucky, fired up on the first try, I didn't even really test anything as I was building it.

It sounded bad at first, but I saw I had a few cold sockets, and I had a grounding problem. All fixed now, and it is amazing. even using my shitty ipod phones (gotta wait till my fiance gets home to use my sony ex71's) Very crisp. I cant wait to get my 2132pa op amp in the mail so I can stop using this shitty TI radioshack special.
