| Tweak Minion | This is a Public Missile "Cirrus". It is a minimum diameter rocket, On a J350 motor, it should hit ~10k feet. Its 1-5/8" diameter with a 1-1/2" diameter engine. The Kit: ![]() Lower Body with the retainer: ![]() Fins Attached: ![]() Epoxy Fillet: ![]() Quick overall view: ![]() The engine, mine is on its way, its gold (different manufacturer) ![]() I still need to attach all of the couplers, fiberglass the fins to they don't fall off, and a few other misc. things. EDIT: Total invested so far: $65 for the kit $35 for the motor retainer $120 for the motor casing $10 in misc supplies =$230 Last edited by JustinL : 10-13-2007 at 07:01 PM. | |

| Nuclear Waste | Wow, cool shit. I played with model rockets way back when, but nothing this caliber. Should be fun. ~Will Courtier~ | |

| Senior Member | So what happens when you get it up that high? are you going to at least shoot off a hamster with a parachute or something? It looks cool though...i used ot do the model rocket thing...until my mom freaked out when one day I started a small "fire" (okay it was a blaze in a ravine...fire dept had to be called...but really no big deal) | |

| Globe Trekker | Aren't there some rules about firing off such things? Don't you need a permit or something? I can't imagine that such a small rocket would be picked up by NORAD or anything. Pretty cool. I need to get back into model rockets. | |

| Gramps | I believe you have to be checked out by an elder hobbyist to get certs that alow you to buy bigger motors. I say, why buy, just make yer own! | |

| Tweak Minion | When you get up that high with this small of a rocket, you tend to loose them Yes, there are rules. There are 2 fields I can fly from, one in Melbourne and one in Labelle. Labelle is clear to 15k feet and Melbourne is good to 10k, but all you have to do is call to get a higher clearance. The way the certification works, you just have to build a rocket yourself, fly it on a H or I motor, get it back in flyable condition. Level 2, you have to take a test and fly it on a J, K, or L motor. | |

| Tweak Minion | The fins are fiberglassed. I'll have to sand them down, then put another layer of real fine cloth to finish it up. ![]() | |

| Nuclear Waste | On a similar note, a friend of mine is now building an RC Submarine. He chose a 3 foot long German U-boat for the hull, and is designing his own drive train. He is planning on having ballast tanks, and wants to incorporate torpedo tubes (with working torpedos!) and a ton of other cool shit. I'm definitely going to keep contact with him on his progress. I'm sure you guys would be amazed by the engineering that he is going to put into this project. ~Will Courtier~ | |

| infinite resolution | Very cool. I've made probably 40 or so Estes model rockets, but obviously those are much smaller, A-D engines. Then we filled them all with explosives.... | |

| Tweak Minion | yea, I use to be big into the estes rockets and left them sitting on display in my room. We got a new dog and he chewed two or three of my new ones up before I had a chance to fly them so I lost interest. I also found out that the estimated altitude of 10,000 feet is actually low, it will be much closer to 12,000 feet. I'm starting to add up the cost of this rocket when it is flight worthy..... not like my old estes. $65 for the kit $35 for the motor retainer $115 for the motor casing $30 in misc supplies $120 for the altimeter $100 for the tracker =$465 in the rocket plus $30-60 for the propellant for each flight It's all primered, any idea on a paint scheme for it? ![]() | |

| No. We can't stop here. | Have to say, love the rocket stand you've got. As for colour, you'll need to go with something that will contrast with the sky like a bright red or orange. | |

| Too old to be this dumb! | I vote for a digital video camera mounted in the nosecone for an in-flight movie! I remember my 3 foot high V2 model. With a D engine it would go about 40 feet up, then fall 20 feet before the chute opened... :P I never did get around to building a Saturn V model. The most fun I had was in building a two-stage rocket with an Estes nose-cone camera, which I never used since I had no darkroom facilities back then. | |

| Too old to be this dumb! | Heh! In my day, we used BALSA for fins and nose cones! None of this plastic stuff they have nowadays. And we had to cut them out, sand them, fill them, sand them some more and paint them, ourselves! My first Alpha rocket I ever made, I glued the fins on sideways! It still worked just fine though! | |

| Tech No0b | sorry to say but i would use all the money for these rockets on computer stuff and tech xD unless you rake in the mula | |

| Tweak Minion | I'll video the launch. Problem with on board cameras are they weigh the rocket down, also the nosecone is solid. The fins are actually not plastic, its called G10 fiberglass. I don't know a whole lot about it other then it is compressed fiberglass and really strong. Most of the smaller rockets use balsa fins etc, but this one is going to pull 60-70gs. As for using the money for something computer related.... why? I have outgrown the fiddling stage and now just want the computer to work for me. This is a computer related project as the altimeter I am considering using is programmable using C. | |
