| Jolly Roger | We were chilling in my friends car a couple of days ago listening to my Ipod( I have an Itrip) decided to throw one of his CD’s in for abit, so we do so, then about half an hour later I go put the Ipod on. We start talking and I don’t notice the Ipods not playing for about 5 mins, I look down and its going through the shuffle, but nothing playing…. Its all down hill from there unfortunately, I could, and can still hear the Ipod trying to access itself constantly, and I hear a clicking sound, I think the HD might be done. It won’t even load up anymore, it never gets passed the apple symbol off the start, and randomly the folder with the exclamation (indicates error) comes up. Sometimes the dead battery comes up to and that leads me to believe it could be that as well, although if I leave it on the charger it does charge, because its been a couple days and it still does have power(its on the doc most of the time) My computer doesn’t recognize it, nor does Itunes so I can’t even try and format it. It’s a 4th gen 40 Gig Ipod ( pre IPod photo) and the warranty is over, is there anything anyone can think of or any links that might help me? has anyone else ever had any problems like mine? I want my Ipod back ![]() |

Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." | ||

| Jolly Roger | its pretty close, but i'm also the second owner, and I fear Ipods going to be a bitch about it as it is. I guess I might aswell try before I try and crack it open. |

| Senior Member | well fix it... press and hold the menu key to restart it, as soon as it powers off and powers on then hold the "previous" and "select" keys down. this will bring you into a diagnostic screen. from there you can find out what's broken. after you know what's broken then google the part. if it is the hd then $100 bucks and a screwdriver should fix it. if you need any help post it here and i'll try to help if all else fails, you could just go to best buy, buy a new ipod photo and change the case from the new one to the old one if yours is scratched up. then swap your old one in the box for the new one and return it. |

| Tweak Minion | Did you try running the the ipod restore? you said your computer nor itunes recognizes it, but i'm not sure exactly what you mean. Does the "do not remove" with the circle with the bar in it, you probably can restore it -- just go the ipod updater, and then restore it (it will erase everything you have on there) -- it could also be a dead battery. |

| Jolly Roger | tried the diagnostic before, does nothing, like I said, the only thing that can be brought up doing ANYTHING that I have tried so far is the battary, folder with the exclamation and the apple symbol. by nit recognizing it I mean that I plug it into the doc and my computer doesn't detect the IPOD, as far as it can tell nothing was just plugged in, so restor won't work either. anyone have a good link as to how to crack a 4th gen Ipod open? |

| gallagher is funny. | my 5 iPods have all had the exact same problem. Accessing a song, and liek 2 seconds later skipping to a different track without playing. Then the inevitable !folder. Sucks man, sorry about not being under warranty. My current one is having the same issues. I'm gonna go to the apple store and just ask to trade it in for a nano. Claiming I've put up with so much shit with them while waiting for new iPod's and about how I find flash memory as more reliable, blah blah blah. Sure I'd be sacrificing 16 gigs of memory, but I get pissed off at my iPod as it is because there's too much music for me to decide. If I had less options I'd be happier. :-\ Even if they put me on a waiting list for a nano, I'd be fine. I don't know how to help you though, I've never been able to fix mine. Once I get that folder I can't do jack shit with it. |

| gallagher is funny. | They never told me what was wrong. They always just sent a "new" one to me. It looked new, but I'm pretty sure that they were just refurbished ones, being that they all broke of the same problem. |

| Jolly Roger | muhahaha, I busted that shit opened and now its alllll good. I have no idea what I did, but its fixed, I'm guessing taking the IPOD apart forced it to reset everything on itself, I had tried every software reset possible without any luck but this seems to have worked, the IPod works fine now. Hopefully it stays that was as it has only been fixed for a day the body of the Ipod is pretty rough now, its got alot of little dings and scratches from trying to pry it open(its not that easy) but regardless it works and thats what matters. |

| Tweak Minion | same thing with mine, except i got the unhappy icon face. it actually sounds like the ipod is crying when the click of death happens : P when i have the time, I'm just gonna order a new hardrive (they just use the toshiba laptop hardrives) and replace the thing myself. apple wanted 250 to repair it...chaa right. |
| "did i listen to pop music because i was miserable, or was i miserable because i listened to pop music?" ward is fucking awesome. | |

| Globe Trekker | If my iPod were to die I probably wouldn't buy another one. Not another hard drive model anyway. I'm holding out for a 20+GB flash player, which I figure is about 2-3 years away. |
