After I finished up posting the other night I put my laptop in the bag and passed out. The next morning the fucker wouldn't power on at all. I think when I put it away the shutdown hung up and it was sitting in the bag running for hours and burned up.

Dell will be out with part on Monday, maybe Tuesday, and I'm stuck using a POS spare until then. And to make matters worse the hotel only offers wireless connection and this laptop does not have wireless.

Well any modern notebook automatically shuts off via the bios if the temp gets high.

So I doubt thats the problem.

Yeah, that's true. And it's a Dell D610 so it's brand spankin' new. But I don't have any other explanation. The other reason I think it was on in the bag is that the battery was completely drained the next morning. It's got a power meter on it so you can see how much juice it has. Dead as a door nail...

At least I have connectivity at the hotel again. They had wireless bridges available for this piece of shit that I'm using.
