Is anyone else sensing a movement towards more mumbling in ghetto slang these days? There are some items that I want to pickup at a Walmart in the area, which very rarely goto (once every couple of months at most), and I wanted to find out when the store closes.

Well, when the lady (I'm being very nice by using that word) answered the phone, I swear it sounded like this, "tangabalin walmah aarereamemeregista canihepyuh?" I swear, it was that shitty. She was too lazy to expend the energy to say the line that probably should have sounded like, "thank you for calling walmart, this is the X. How can I help you?" The image in my head of what this lady looked like was so vivid, I could probably pick her out of a police lineup. Given her mumbling, I wanted to make sure I asked a question that a simple number would answer: "What time do you close today?" answer: "5" *click...I hang up* I didn't want to hear any more of that voice or communicate any more past the answer I needed.

It is sad really. Its sad enough that people don't pronounce words properly, which is understandable given how slang and dialect spreads. Slang or dialect doesn't really irritate me too much b/c it is human. But now people are adding mumbling into the mix? They are too lazy to even pronounce their slang? How much of this have you guys come across?

What pisses me off is that those people seem proud of the fact that they're "ghetto." Why would you be proud of not being able to speak English properly? Are they regressing into their African forefathers?

I don't get too irritated at people mumbling and speaking poorly. That's one more person standing between me and starvation. As long as those idiots are able to make a living and eat I know I'm in no danger.

I hate to say it, but when I'm speaking fast, my words run together and I drop some pronunciation. I am dyslexic, though, and if I'm excited, it's hard to understand me.

I do live in the south...New Orleans area. Many of the educated and semi-educated whites here have a "Yat", which annoys me to a lesser degree. Being from the outskirts, I carry some of the dialect, but it isn't as bad as the "Who Dat" or "howsya mom n 'em" people. Basically, if I'm talking fast or with more emotion/less thought-buffering the speech, more of it will show.

A point I want to make is that dialect/accent is not the same as just lazy ass drawling/mumbling that my OP pointed out.

I am dyslexic as well, and have a tendancy to run words together when I get excited. I'm getting much better at it, but still have to watch myself. It really makes for some fun phone communications while running drills on the boat.

We have some jamaican people that run a KFC by my house, and they are horrible with this. They mumble everything, and are rude as hell. They get mad if you ask them to repeat something. I've even just walked away from them before I pay and leaving because just ordering a meal pissed me off.
