Microsoft Windows OneCare Live launches in June for an annual fee of $49.95(This is an anti-virus)

OMG this is insane... How can microsoft charge money for this? If windows didn't have all these security flaws there wouldnt be viruses in the first place! Now they want extra money to keep these viruses off. This software seems like it should be free. Forget free, if they can keep a virus off it should be a windows update, not a seperate program. People hate microsoft enough already for these security exploits and now they want to charge $$?!?!?!??! Is this lawsuit material?

"It is good that war is terrible, otherwise we would become over fond of it." - Robert E. Lee.

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."

Not really. AFAIK, MS is doing the same as CA, McAfee, Panda Software, Symantec, and Trend Micro. They release new versions of their security suites every year which they sell you for around $49.99.
Look at it this way: you can use Paint, Paint Shop Pro, or Photoshop; AbiWord or WordPad; Word or WordPerfect; Office, OpenOffice, or StarOffice; Musicmatch Jukebox, Winamp, or WMP; Kerio Personal Firewall, Windows Firewall, or ZoneAlarm; Firefox, IE, or Opera; etc. Basically, you can use MS's products or 3rd party products. Considering that you only pay for the OS one time and the security updates are free, I don't see why it's such a big deal.

If it were free then they'd be sued for a monopoly again because they'd give away everything...they're doing it the right way.

Also, in addition to anti-virus, OneCare Live has a more advanced firewall.

BTW, MS gives away Windows Defender for free.

Don't complain so much!

You know.

For all we know. These virus software companies are probably the same ones releasing the viruses.
Then marketing themselves as being the first to resolve the issues or find the viruses so you go buy their software.

MS is charging us for this? They could be the same ones allowing viruses into their OS
its rediculous if you think about it.

EDIT: windows defender is only for legit copies of XP. FYI. unless....

I don't like the new look of windows defender either, they totally dumbed it down.

Bingo. They'd be in court again real fast if they gave it away or charged dramatically less than McAfee or Norton.

Well yeah, they do. But what would the lawyers for McAfee, Norton, Trend, Computer Acssociates, etc do if they were suddenly unable to sell their product because of such a move by MS? The DOJ would be involved pretty quickly.

i don't think mcafee, norton and them bastards can do shit as long as microsoft doesn't include it in windows and it has to be downloaded seperately. you can't really monopoloize anti-virus because there are already a slew of different companies making them and microsoft won't be making any money if it's free.

But what would the incentive be for us to use 3rd party SW if MS decided to give it away like a slut?

This man represents the majority of computer users. Microsoft is merely catering to them.

It would be no different from the security flaws norton products have and people pay money for that crap.
