I'm in agreement with Jackalope about the use of BS to push the public into legislation that wouldn't stand a chance if the real thueth were known. You guys don't see that this is the way things are being changed now days? Spin a few studies in a way that supports what it is you want to change and pump it up to change tha public opinion and put it out there. PETE, Greenpeace, etc. do it, anti tobaco does it, next it may well be anti alcohol, anti aftershave, anti sex, ant, anti ,anti...

While tobaco is prooven to be bad, that's not the point, this isn't about the merits of what is trying to be change, rather the way it's being changed. The precidence has been set and the public is buying into
the shit and laws are being passed. It's a ploy that's being used because it works. FYI: I'm a smoker, I agree with the smoking bans at indoor locations. I don't smoke around kids, in my own home or in my car/truck. Indoor smoking bans are a logical thing, but that's not the goal of the propaganda machine....the goal is an all-out ban on tobaco and it won't stop until it's completed it's mission. Next it'll be something that maybe one of you indulge in. It won't stop at tobaco, I guarantee it.

When I smoke I don't do it in my house, and never around my kids. When I was a kid my old man blew smoke in our face for years, so it's a pet peave of mine. I think they should tax tobacco more heavily and put the proceeds into a fund to pay for the health related costs. At six dollars a pack fewer people would smoke, and those that did wouldn't be a burden on the health system any longer.

It's being done right now in the state of Oregon. A pack of Malboros costs anywhere from 5-6.50 a pack. The taxes are huge on tobaco. The lobby was to get the tax money to pay for "health" costs. But guess what? The money goes into the general fund and is being used for anything and everything except what it was lobbied for. In Oregon, they need a double majority to pass any and all new taxes. This tax, wasn't even voted on because everyone believes the propaganda mentioned by Jackalope and they knew there'd be no backlash. So the "taxes for health cost" ploy is just that, a ploy to generate more revenue into the general fund with no guarantee at all of where it will actually be used.

I don't smoke but I don't mind it being allowed. Gets rid of people faster off this over populated world.

Cigarettes already cost $6ish a pack in Chicago. I went down there a little while ago to hang out with some friends and I was coming back, stopped on the north side for a pack because I was fiending bad, they wanted like $6.10.. I was like uhh.. fuck that. So I went to the place next to it and they wanted $5.90. That's when I said fuck this, I'll wait until I cross back into Wisconsin

Yeah you're right...we hate everyone and intentionally blow smoke into everyone's faces all the time.

/sarcasm

As for the prices, I know it's really high in several states and Ohio is getting there but being so close to KY I can still get Marlboro's for $2.95 a pack -$27 a carton.

They're already $4 a pack here on base, and in excess of $6.50 a pack down in NYC. I don't see how anyone can afford to smoke... I remember (back in Iowa) that they were $2.88 a pack for the longest time... Oh, and these prices are all for Marlboros.

I enjoy smoking a lot. I hate so much that smokers are treated like fucking animals because they like smoking. In the winter I have to stand outside like a fucking dog. huddling closer to other smokers and forcing casual conversation just to shield the wind.

fuck that. and fuck people so concerned with second-hand smoke.

that shit isn't that bad. it is if you're around it all the time. but shit, if you are around smoke, just leave. (or have them leave if it's not really a place for smoking...)

The worst ad? The one with the vicious dog they name "Fluffy".

Otherwise I don't mind the ads. Yeah, it's twisted propaganda but at least the end result is for the common good - fewer people smoking. I just don't like it when the vilify the smokers themselves.

A pack is now 10$ in here.

Plus tomorrow, may 31th, a new law kicks in.

Smoking is prohibited in restaurants and bars (it already was in any public space). Woot!!! no more annoying smoke!!

I'll have a hard time with my crack smoking habits after a meal at the local pizza restaurant!!!!!

Been that way here for quite awhile now. Can't smoke on sidewalks adjoining government buildings either.

I don't smoke - I prefer to be around people who don't and I avoid it as much as possible. As a kid I had severe asthma and almost died twice because of other peoples rights to polute my lungs...I mean...err..... their right to smoke..... I don't see a point in doing it..... but I also don't support the laws that keep people from smoking in their own house or in bars...since I don't go to those either..... but at a resteraunt trying to enjoy a meal then I get smoke and then everything tastes nasty....

I could go on for hours....

Its just like those guys/girls who blast their music driving down the road.....why should I be forced to listen to it if I don't like it...because his/her rights to be a dick/bitch?

Its your right to do what you want to yourself but why feel the need to force it upon others, and sue people or protest or bitch about them defending their rights to not have to share in your liberties?[/b]

imho:
This is the fundamental problem with laws and interpretation of laws in a liberal political atmosphere. There is more concern for the rights of the few and not for the rights of the many.

I read a short story once where smoking was outright banned, the last remaining smokers were hold up in a cave, and the authorities came to get them. They tried to run and couldn't because they were smokers. It was amusing and kinda scary at the same time.
