1st off, thank you Aaron for thinking of me when you posted in that other thread. I'm perfectly safe and ok. I even have my laptop, desktop, and a car adapter (plugs into the cig. lighter and gives you a normal house AC jack) for the roadtrips ahead.

Now, I like anyone w/ 1/2 a brain (or sadly enough, the means/$$ to), evacuated when they saw this bastard coming in. I have been lucky enough to have cool places to stay when evacuated. I'm not in a hotel room or shelter. I stayed w/ friends of the family for the 1st 2 nights in Lafayette La and now I'm in Houston w/ family (I have tons of family here in Houston). I'm going to be in Houston till they let us back into the region early monday morning.

Here's a few things:

1. OIL AND GAS: gas pipelines to refineries on land have been cut and that is going to put a damper on supply. We also have the offshore drilling that California and Florida are too wimpy to do and I garuntee that more than just a few rigs were damaged. I saw the gas price thread and laughed. I'm not even going to bother. Just be prepared for rising gas prices...the industry is down here and we provide this country with up to 30% of its oil.

I hope the gas industry bounces back quickly down here. My mom works @ shells corporate office in downtown New Orleans and even though she is getting ready to retire anyway, I don't think she's quite ready to just yet.

2. I have avoided racial slurs on these forums before, but I'm going to say it this time out of pure RAGE....The looting and disobedience in the city is 99% poverty stricken stupid ******s who have no values or respect for shit. Every other evacuee who is watching the coverage of the looting wants to flat out shoot those assholes. This won't be tolerated and I even saw troops coming in on the highway when I was on the way to Houston for the purpose of stopping the looting. Our governer is fed up with it and won't tolerate it. They will put the plug on that shit fast, and I hope they cap a few! Here is some of the behavior:

-stabbings and rapes in the superdome! (mostly black people from the projects evacuated there)

-some wallmarts have been raided for guns to shoot @ the police. I heard they shot at firemen, which especially piss me off b/c I work with alot of firemen. The part-timers at the convention center of New Orleans where I work work in my department and are the guys who do much of our wiring (I'm in the tech services department that handles internet/phone). So just by working with them, I have gained respect for the firemen...nice guys.

-we saw some screenshots of them carrying shelves of goods from a store INTO THE GOD DAMN PROJECTS! GEE!!! I WONDER WHO IS AT FAULT?

-they don't have cars or cars to steal (lol) so I'm not too woried about them getting to Kenner where I live in the immediate future. I don't know about a week from now though, which is when I'd be going back home for a bit. I wish I had a gun b/c when I go back to assess my families property I don't know if there's going to be some fucking looter on my property w/ a gun or not. I would soooooo love to have one of MSP's automatic high calibur rifles right now.

3. The Flooding: Well, from what I've heard from people 1st hand...the aerial footage on TV is MISLEADING in some spots. Obviously, seeing water up to the roof of a house speaks for itself, but some of the other areas where there is only a little water in the houses if any look much worse on TV.

It is a complex pattern of flooding. Some areas got more flooded than others due to the geography of the region. Some places are completely underwater and others are much much drier.

4. My property: My house faired very well from what I heard from friends who checked out the area. A friend of the family stayed @ the hospital w/ his wife b/c she had to be onhand to take care of her patients (she's a nurse). He drove by my house and told my parents that it looks like we only had a few inches of water IF ANY in the house!! The roof might be missing some shingles, and one of our fences is blown over, but at least we have most of our shit. He said my car looks ok as well and the water only got up to the bottom of my rims. If I didn't lose my car, I'm going to be overjoyed. I have another friend who had to stay in b/c he's a firemen and he checked out his parent's house which is around the corner from me and he said they had minimal water in the house. The carpet was ruined, but so what; 1. you still have a house and 2. carpet is easy and cheap to replace.

As good as it feels to hear news like this about our property, I still haven't seen 1st hand and I haven't seen exactly how much damage occured yet. I will do that monday. Even if I make it well, I will still feel shitty that so many others made it out SOOOOOO much worse. My sister was crying when they showed Chalmette underwater b/c she's got soo many friends who live there and lost their houses. Same story w/ me...its going to feel wierd going to work (or anywhere for that matter) talking to people who lost pretty much everything but their health and what they could fit in their cards during evac.

I have the digital cammy w/ me, and I'll be taking plenty pics of the property for sure. I'll upload some pics of the aftermath. From what I hear, aside from the flooding, there are downed trees and powerlines EVERYWHERE!! Obviously this makes roads unpassable and contributes to why people can't get home just yet.

so...see you next week!

Glade to hear you are ok.

Definitely take and post pictures for us, the media likes to exaggerate stuff and it's hard to tell which part of it is true.

IIRC I believe that oil production from the Gulf of Mexicans is close to 1 MM barrels a day, with the US using about 20 MM a day. So we are talking about somewhere around 5% of the oil supply. For all I know the region may produce 30% of refined products, or 30% of domestic oil, not sure where that 30% number being tossed around is coming from. So the loss of oil from that area is not a huge problem. On the refining side, I would assume that they will be back online between days and weeks. The implications of transportation disruption I have no idea about, maybe you can explain that between fits of laughter.

I think 30% is the amount of US oil produced.

well, I've heard conflicting information on the exact figures of how much we contribute. I hear anywhere from 25% to 30%. Here is a quick quote from this article:

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil prices surged briefly to a record above $70 a barrel on Monday as one of the biggest hurricanes in U.S. history disrupted oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico, home to a quarter of total domestic oil and gas production.
I overlooked the "domestic" part, but it is still a signifigant figure. I guess if it is a big deal, you can research it and form your own conclusion, but I'm sticking to my true point that we contribute a large amount.

Anyways, I don't want to turn this thread into an argument over oil. I meant it to be an update for the T3D old-timers still posting on these forums concerning the situation in New Orleans from the perspective of a resident of the outskirts of New Orleans. I see how mentioning the oil can hijack the subject of it. It just shows what some people care about.

pics will come next week when I get back from Kenner to a place w/ power.

Glad to hear from you dude. I swear that if my company would pay my salary I'd come down there for 2-3 weeks to help out. I'd love to unload my fucking SKS into a few looters. God damned animals...

In an interview with ABC television, President Bush condemned the wave of looting sweeping New Orleans.

"I think there ought to be zero tolerance of people breaking the law during an emergency such as this," he said.
Can't argue with that. Apparently the evacuation from the Superdome is temporarily stopped because someone started firing at one of the helicopters, and there are some disturbing stories going around. Sounds like things are really going to shit over there...

The Gulf Coast refineries that were shut down by Katrina/flooding were responsible for 10% of the Gasoline produced in the US, and the two pipelines, shut down due to lack of electricity, were responsible for transporting a serious chunk of oil inland to other refineries, which means a shortage of gasoline refinement just when demand is peaking due to rescue/aid efforts.

Poor people looting is at least understandable, if reprehensible, but the Superdome fiasco is beyond belief and beyond stupid, where rescue efforts are halted due to people with guns, some of whom have shot at a military helicopter...

thanks guys.

Heavy, I want to clarify something real quick. I was NOT referring to you or most black people when I dropped the N bomb up there. I am referring to the same kind of people who would be classified as white trash if they were white. I am referring to the same people who would go after your family or mine. I am referring to the same people who are attacking and raping black people who seeked refuge in the superdome! There is a difference between black people and those who would be referred to via the N-Bomb word.

As of right now, I am very ancy to go home and assess the situation. I am hearing conflicting reports and rumors as to what the looters are doing. I want to see with my own eyes what is going on.

I am sticking to the old addage of "cooler heads will prevail."

From what I'm hearing New Orleans is like 70% "ethnic", aka a ghetto. A lot of what is happening makes sense to me now that I know that.

edit: great...the President is landing in my city (Kenner). Maybe we will have extra protection in the area. I hope they keep military in the city when I go back to get rid of the criminals causing trouble.
