...would you attempt to escape?

(Based on this story: BBC NEWS | Europe | Inmate escapes German jail in box)

If you were sent up to the big house, would you do your time without question or would you attempt to escape? Would the time you were supposed to serve matter, ie if you were serving more than 10 years, would you try to escape?

One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.

I don't see why not. If I had life in prison, it would be my #1 priority.

Haven't you seen The Shawshank Redemption?

well define imprisoned, there is a difference between being imprisoned and being stuck in a tiny cell in a prison.

yes i would try to escape if it was a life sentence because no way in hell would i be somebody's bitch
but if it was like 2-10 years, i wouldnt

if had to goto prison, i'd probably kill myself. and im very serious about that.

after watching this movie the other night (havent made a thread about it), its very good and very scary at the same time. I can only assume OZ on hbo was worse.

Being imprisoned is being imprisoned, no matter the size of the cell. You're still stuck and someone's bitch, whether it be fellow inmates or the guards or both.

If I was going to be in for life, I would definitely try to break out. Fuck that.

Also, Torx... Felon was an excellent movie. I saw it a couple weeks ago. The director made me feel depressed watching it, but entertaining none the less. Did a great job making the audience feel like they were in his shoes.

yes, nopun, it definitely feels like youre there.. scary

thing about prison.. its easy to get caught up in shit thus keeping you in there even longer.

its one big he said-he said drama party for men in prison.
really sad, im thinking they put meds in the food and water to keep them aggressive and keep them in jail away from society.

A sentence of life, or one exceeding 20 years or so without hope of parole would send me over the fence. With nothing to lose why not?

If I committed a crime and felt remorse, and the sentence was relatively short, I would behave and do my time. If I was a real criminal and didn't feel remorse for my crime then I think escaping would be all I thought about.

Dont know much about civilian court and prison system. But if some one so worried about getting abuse in the system by other inmates. Just walk up to a guard and hit them. Then take some beating and the chances are they will throw you in isolation.

I this pretty much is my stance on the issue. Though obviously if I felt I was wrongly convicted and I wasn't able to do dick about it, I'd be all about escaping, no matter the short sentence.

I'm also curious as to what defines a short sentence to all. MSP mentioned 20 years and to me that's an eternity. I think I could do a maximum of 5 years without wanting to escape, not counting the crap I'd have to put up with inside (the more crap, the more I'd look to break out).

I think being on the run and/or living in a 3rd world country would trump being locked up for years. It's all about freedom, baby!

well what i meant was i can be imprisoned and not be in prison/jail. i can be stuck in a cast in a hospital and feel imprisoned. but that has nothing to do with the article or topic so my answer still stands yes and no

I've watched enough prison shows on TV and that place isn't for a guy like me. You pretty much have to join a gang and will constantly be fucked with until unless you get some respect or protection. Even then you might get stabbed or raped. So, I'd make a shank for sure just in case but I'd do my best to come up with some master plan to escape... unless my sentence was like 5 years then I'd tough it out.

You can't really go to prison with the mindset of "just behaving and doing your time."

Like Torx said, trouble finds you. If you're not part of a prison gang, you will get punked for whatever you have. If you don't fight back, you're basically a walking dead-man because no one will give you any respect. If you decide to join up with a prison gang, you will have to put in work (stabbing, killing smuggling, whatever). So "behaving" in prison really doesn't happen in a gen-pop arena.

So can you elect for solitary confinement? I've always thought that if I went to prison I would just do that.

I would go insane in confinement. Not sure what I would do if I went to prison, I think the decision would be impossible to make until I was actually in that scenario.

EDIT: I just remembered that I thought I was going to prison once. Long story that some of you know. I was on a plane and the pilot came over the intercom saying there were officials waiting for someone at the exit and I had just paid money to leave a country under the radar. I went through denial, panic, doubt and finally accepted that I was going. Couldnt believe when they put some other guy in handcuffs. I started to think about how I would get through it then and planned to take on projects (educate myself further) to keep my mind occupied.

You don't wanna be in the SHU. That shit will drive you nuts. if you could get there. The Segregated Housing Unit is for the worst of the worst. High risk inmates. Either extremely violent, high-escape risks, wack jobs like Hannibal Lechter (yes I know he's not real) or gang leaders they need to keep from communicating with their gangs.

You can always say you fear for your life and try to get in protective custody but you have to go through a review to get that and even if you did, the lowest form of life in prison are PC dropouts, State's Witnesses and snitches; All the people you find in PC. Some gangs send their own into a PC yard just to take out people like that.
