All my life it’s been put upon me to graduate from college. All I ever really wanted to do was get a job and make money or join the military. This wasn’t good enough for my mom though I had to graduate college. So to make my mom happy I suffered through 4 1/2 years of college justifying to myself well, when I get out I’ll be educated and find a nice paying job. Well reality is, the market is saturated with educated people and I can’t get a good job because better people are getting them. Now I find myself not even able to get shitty jobs because I’m over qualified and there afraid I’ll leave for something better. So I’m stuck in this limbo of trying to get a job but cant get a good one and cant get a shitty one. I'm frustrated as hell and instead of getting moral support from my mother who forced me into this situation. She comes home and interrogates me about why I haven’t got a job yet. She fucks with me so much on it then comes up with... Well why don’t you get a job at stop n shop ... at this point I lost it and demolished a chair in the room. I mean I started at a grocery store when I was 17 years old now I’m 22 with a degree does it make any sense to go back to that. If I had stayed at the grocery store or even home depot instead of college I’d be a manager now making decent money. I know in the long run college was probably the better choice but right now it sucks. That’s my rant.

PS: all this negativity has to come on my girlfriends 21st birthday so now I feel guilty as fuck that I’m upset as shit on her birthday.

It's sad how a lot of people who go to college think that they'll be making money right when they get out of it. I wouldn't consider myself in the same boat but I dislike college. I'll complete it and fulfill my degree though. However, a lot of fields are saturated and the ever so popular "It's not what you know, but who you know" comes into play. Keep your head up, I'm sure it'll pay off in the future.

Since I'm only 18 and just starting College, I don't feel I have any room to say "I know how you feel Man..", but I do understand the frustration of feeling stuck between what seems like the right decision and what seems like the wrong decision.

Sometimes in life it seems like things should be in Black and White, simple yes or no's, rights and wrongs, but in reality there are millions of shades of gray.

In the long run you're going to benefit from going to college. You know this, Your mom knows this, and I'm sure the majority of the members here agree. Anyways, I guess my closest situation to a limbo between good and bad was after losing all of the weight that I did. Now that I'm so thin and tall, no pants fit me right and it seems as if I should have just kept the weight on so I'd have normal fitting pants. Heh. But I mean, I'd rather be healthy and in shape with akward pants, then chubby and with decent fitting pants.

But stick to it, you'll find a job, and I'm sure you'll make a thread about it so we can all congratulate you.

P.S. What's your degree in?

integra00, I know a LOT of guys who ended up in this boat. A good friend struggled for four years, racking up enormous dept, to get his under grad in education and jazz saxophone. During that time I knocked my girlfriend up and had to quit college and get a job to support them. So the whole time I was working and getting experience. When he got out he was making 1/2 of what I was making, except I didn't have any debt. And his long term earning potential was no better if not worse than mine.

But that situation is not the norm, and you will land on your feet. You've graduated and don't have a family to support, right? Any debt? If it were me I would take this time to travel, maybe join the Peace Corps or get a job in another city. You don't appreciate it at the moment but you have a tremendous amount of freedom and possibilities. It's just how you look at it.

There's no shame in taking a job at the grocery store again. Just start socking money away and be ready for opportunity to strike. And don't let your Mom control your destiny. At this point your life is to live however you wish and she can either support you or fuck off.

I started off going to college under the impression that doing so would get me a great job right out of college. After 2 years I relized that wasnt the case and found a major I was happier with. Going to college was more of a personal challenge than a means ot an end for me and I guess thats why i found my experience so much more fulfilling.
College is defiantely worth it if your looking to expand your knowledge and not jsut going for job training. Its ment to be an experience to enjoy not one to just get through. If anyone is not finding it enjoyable they should quit and find either a major they do enjoy or get out and go to a trade school instead.

1- To get a shitty job, DONT put your college degree on your resume. Stop after the previous diploma.

2- Yea.... waiting for a good job sucks a lot. I wish you the best about that.

I really think that it is about how hard you work, and not necessarily what you know. (in reguards to a college degree)

My brother's girlfriend's dad never graduated high school and now makes more than $100,000 selling corporate insurance. This man had to really hussle to be able to get to where he is at today.

why didnt you try to get into some sort of internshipe while you where going to college? I know a few of my friends right now that are struggling to find a job, but then there are others that are doing pretty good. I opeted to not go to college and find myself doing pretty damn good. Just keep fillin out those applications and hopefully you will find the right place.

I do know how you feel...me and a roommate graduated at the same time, waited 6 months to find a job and now we're doing pretty well. He's doing better financially but sales is a high risk and high reward.

Lord Kain's got the right idea....dummy-up a resume' just for the menial job for right now...a job that it won't amount to a hill of beans for you to quit for a better job. All the while slamming out the real resume's for the good jobs. Life is a matter of sight...what you look for you'll find. If you look for negative, you'll find it....also, if you look for positive, you'll see that. It's all about solutions, for me, I have to
work the sollutions and not the problems, else I nut up on everyone around me.
Sometimes sollutions come along sooner for some than for others. Your's will materialize as long as you suit up, show up and don't give up. Entering into depression will only delay finding the sollution for any problem.....so chin up, go have a great birthday celebration with your GF. And just for the record, your education makes you a better person if for anything, it prooves that you got to achieve a goal, you stuck with it to completion and didn't fail. My hat is off to you.

Say goodbye to our beloved planet. Because there is
alot more money to be made in emitting greenhouse
gasses, than curtailing emissions.

Get out of the box, then recycle it.

damn that sucks.

I didn't realize it was tough to find a job after college.

If I were you, I would just lie on my resume if your worried about places checking to see if your 'overqualified'.

If I had gotten my degree I wouldn't have the job I have today. They hired me for pennies on the dollar because I didn't have the degree or a lot of experience, and before it was over I was so far up their ass they had to pay me a king's ransom to keep me (and their shit running). Hussle > degree any damn day of the week.

That's why I'm still at my current place...however, I'm not sure I'd have gotten hired w/o a degree (even though some have), I just didn't have the experience but having the degree gave me some credibility and shows that I had the ability to learn.

Wierd... i guess it sometimes matters where you graduate? My sister was able to get a two year contract job with Intel right after she graduated at UCSB with her degree which is Computer Science, she had no connections either.

Learn something

It was funny how I got my current job. This guy at my Mom's church worked for Siemens. He knew I was working in IT (at a data center, grunt work) and that I was a computer hobbyist on the side. He came to me one day while I was humoring my Mom and sitting in church with her and said "Hey, my buddy's company is having problems with one of their PCs, you interested in having a look?" I said "Sure" and took it home to my workshop. After a little while I figured out it had a dead motherboard and they needed to replace the PC because it was old. I fixed nothing, just backed up their data and returned the boat anchor to them.

A few weeks later he said to me "We have an IT position open at Siemens, you interested?" "Not really", but he persisted and pestered me for MONTHS. He gave me the number of the guy who was their current network admin and after some pressure I called him to see what the job was about. At that point I had no experience with Exchange or Windows NT domains, so I told him I didn't think I had the necessary skills. "We'll teach you all that, just come in." So I showed up for the interview and nearly walked out because their piece of shit HR manager was 45 minutes late. I interviewed and forgot about it for a month or so, when the job offer came in.

They immediately sent me to $4,000 worth of training, and after a year I proved myself and got a 35% raise, nearly doubling the salary I had prior to the job. I met my wife there. And the network admin I called for more info is now one of my best friends, as is the engineering manager who refered me. Needless to say I think it was fucking destiny. Right circumstance, right timing, right people.

Here's my advice, if your looking for some.

Do what you have to do to move out of your parents home. Grinding it out at a job you're overqualified for is no shame, but being ashamed of it, is.

If you can honestly say that you've done all you can to get the kind of job you think you "can" do, but still haven't gotten it, then your choice seems pretty clear.

The person who is waiting for something to turn up might start with their shirt sleeves. - Garth Henrichs

now im worried, what is your degree in?

"It is good that war is terrible, otherwise we would become over fond of it." - Robert E. Lee.

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."
