Just curious as to how many of you use a battery backed-up UPS. I've been debating whether to pick a 550V APS unit that's on sale at Staples right now.

Never, unless I really need to protect my workstation.

I use one currently, and I will continue to use one for the foreseeable future. The power in my neighborhood was pretty unreliable a year or so ago and the blips would constantly crash my machines. Now the lights flicker and I hardly notice.

I have a UPS and a managed power strip. I am pretty anal about those things.

I have one and love it.

I've only had the power go off a few times in the 5 or so years I've had a UPS, but I'm always glad I have it just to be safe.

Do you need one? Probably not, unless the power in your area is really bad, but the piece of mind is always nice to have.

I used to. It kicked off randomly, so I got rid of it. Currently I'm using a Furman rack-mount power conditioner to power everything, including my computer and recording gear.

If you've got a desktop, it adds an increased level of security/safety (and a really neat "feature") for a nominal fee. I think I paid $35 for mine and I love it... whenever the power's flickered, anywhere I've lived for the past several years, I never lost anything. That's peace of mind..

For my notebook, why bother?

I do not use one, not saying I won't ever but just haven't had the need to invest in one.

Side step of topics:
For those that have a UPS, how big are they? Do they just have enough power to make sure you save your documents then shutdown safely or could you keep running for a while on them?

I have this guy, one of the cheapest ones:

Its probably 12" long, 4" wide and 6" high, pretty small. This one can run my computer and two LCDs for maybe 10 minutes. I don't know why you would get a big one unless you really wanted to run your desktop in a blackout, but that just seems kind of dumb...

I've been using an APC power bar and it's worked good over the years.

I've thought about getting an actual UPS but I'm going to wait till I build my brand spankin' new computer.

At my work we have a UPS for the equipment (granted it is about the size of a large truck). Without the UPS the equipment failures double. The UPS filters the power which makes a more stable environment for the electronics.

a bit much for a single machine haha

on one of my camera systems in kitchener Ontario I use a UPS X1300 and it functions quite well keeping 2 cameras, 2 computers and the entire network online for about an hour (the outages there are somewhat frequent in bad weather but never long)

as for my machine at home I don't, but the power infrastructure in toronto is pretty strong and I haven't had my power go out in at least 5 years. Though due to all the old wiring in most of the buildings I've lived in I use an APC 1200w power conditioner to keep things steady.
