| rubblerubble | Anyone else trying this out? Google's new browser attempt. One of the big things they've done is each tab runs in it's own process. So say you've got a page open and java breaks down while you're writing an email on another tab. You won't lose all your work, just the tab with the java. Google Chrome - Download a new browser Google Chrome - Google Book Search ^some odd little comic showing what went into chrome. So far, despite that it doesnt have any bells and whistles like my firefox, it's pretty slick. And it's omgwtf fast. |

| Globe Trekker | I guess more choices in browsers don't hurt, but with the mighty Firefox only making up about 15% of the market it's going to be pretty tough for them to compete with IE7/IE8. |

| It kind of sounds like Google itself doesn't much care about it's browser, except as a vehicle for it's V8 javascript engine. It seems like it's V8 that Google is actually trying to push, from what the toon presentation is saying. The javascript engine does kind of worry me though, with the way V8 handles pointers. It sounds like a security problem, with the "stupid pointer tricks" it will enable. It seems that, and the smarter separation of browser components, are the main selling points (for instance, the fact that the browser runs in the tab, rather than the tab running in the browser, so if one tab goes South, it doesn't take ALL the tabs with it, the way Firefox does... | Curmudgeon | It does seem pretty quick once it has cached some data. Some things I immediately don't like: Doesn't appear to be any sort of smooth scrolling feature The tabs are above the address bar and I can't move it. Double clicking on the tab bar doesn't open a new tab. I can't add/remove adress bar buttons... like where is the access to my bookmarks without having to have a whole bar dedicated to the task? |

Anyways, I really like what theyre doing with it thus far. Once they end up getting a bit more pluglin support, I might just be making the jump. It took a couple years till Firefox was worthy of making a jump. The fact that it's day one with chrome and so many people already dig it bodes pretty well.

| Hi, I'm the mayor. | Let's see.. first impressions... Seems very fast. Much faster and lighter than Firefox, just like Opera. The tabs up top reduce wasted vertical space (great for low resolutions on notebooks, eeePC) Address bar automatically does Google Search (a quick hack in most versions of FF) Each tab creates a separate Windows process, so you can close a tab without crashing the whole browser Opening a new tab gives you the Search history thing (which is nice), the most visited sites, and recent books ... very nice. I'll definitely be using it until I see a good reason to use FF instead. |

| Dont mess with old school | I'm tempted to try it but I'm worried about any other crap google might want to install. Would you say chrome is a lite installation with little bloatware? How much of the system did it modify (start up items, system tray crap, right click context menus and crap like that)? |

| Tweak Minion | It installs nothing. It even bypassed UAC so I don't think it installs a lot. I was able to install it on a lab computer that requires a username/password to install updates for Firefox. I hate whoever maintains the PCs down there. |

Edit: The update utility could've been from Google Earth, which I also just recently installed.

| Hi, I'm the mayor. | Some neat things... Hit Ctrl-F (search) and look for text on this page. Every instance is highlighted. Also, on the scrollbar to the right, you can see where the text occurs and click to it. You can resize any text box (like this Quick Reply box), overriding the web site's preferences. You can also pull tabs out of the window and they become their own window. |
